However, there are two exceptions. First, the oldest such program, which launched in Saint Kitts and Nevis over three and a half decades ago, is still running without interruption. Second, Dominica's program, which has been in existence for more than a quarter of a century.<\/p>\n<p>All other schemes are less than ten years old. Over the past two decades, many countries have entered and exited the investor passport market, including the Comoros (this country's offer is no longer available) and Grenada (which relaunched its program in 2013 after more than a decade-long break). Some other countries, such as Montenegro and Turkey, have only recently entered the discussed market. <\/p>\n<p>Others, like Cyprus, have a cap on the number of applications they process each year. There are programs that face political resistance, like the Moldovan scheme, whose application acceptance was temporarily suspended until the second half of 2020, and then the program was completely shut down. <br \/>\n<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"habracut\"><\/a><\/noindex><br \/>\nThe essence is that there is nothing permanent in this industry. Both parties can and should benefit from the deal. <\/p>\n<p>You need a second passport to create a 'Plan B', expand your freedom of movement, obtain better opportunities for tax planning, and take advantage of many other benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Governments need foreign direct investment to stimulate the economy, whether it\u2019s investments in the real estate market, developing local businesses and increasing employment, or purchasing government bonds, the funds from which can be redirected to more state-specific projects.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the country and its specific needs at the moment, candidates for economic citizenship will be offered several options to choose from. Here are the most common types of investments that will allow you to obtain citizenship for money in another state:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Donation<\/h3>\n<p>\nThe simplest way to obtain citizenship for money is to make a donation. Donation amounts start at $100,000 in several Caribbean jurisdictions and can go up to \u20ac650,000 in Malta. You make a donation, and officials give you a legal second passport. You will not get that money back.<\/p>\n<p>Donations are accumulated in a special fund, the money from which is used to achieve various governmental objectives. For instance, Dominica uses such funds for building housing for the underprivileged. <\/p>\n<p>A donation is generally the cheapest and easiest way to obtain citizenship for money since you won't have to deal with the \"headache\" of selling investment assets later.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, one might think this is a waste of money. But if you can save a million dollars on taxes by acquiring a particular passport, who cares about the \"modest\" $100,000 expense? If you can travel to China with your new passport and significantly boost your business there, consider that $100,000 an investment in your enterprise.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Investing Money in Real Estate<\/h3>\n<p>\nAlmost all investment citizenship programs, except for those in Turkey, Malta, and Cyprus, require candidates seeking citizenship through real estate to purchase only government-approved assets. <\/p>\n<p>This often means inflated prices due to supply shortages and the challenges associated with exiting investments. In the case of most Caribbean programs, obtaining citizenship through real estate may offer a share in a property rather than a specific villa or apartment.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s another important question: if you decide to buy citizenship through real estate, what do you plan to do with it? Especially if it\u2019s about real estate on a tropical island where the market isn't developed enough for an investor to easily resell the respective asset. The most effective resale method might very well be to find a new buyer among those who are also obtaining citizenship through real estate.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, you can purchase almost any property in Turkey, and if the investment amount meets the official requirements, you will be allowed to apply for Turkish citizenship. And since the asset doesn't need prior approval from the government, its price won\u2019t be inflated. <\/p>\n<h3>3. Hybrid Model<\/h3>\n<p>\nIn some countries, officials like to complicate matters and require applicants to make multiple types of investments plus a donation to obtain citizenship. Most hybrid programs can be found in Europe. <\/p>\n<p>For instance, Malta requires applicants to make a significant donation, purchase government bonds, buy or rent a property, and maintain residency status for at least a year to establish a 'genuine link' with the country.<\/p>\n<p>This is, of course, due to Malta's status as an EU member. Such status makes its passport much more valuable than Caribbean documents. Meanwhile, those looking to obtain such a Maltese document are subject to stringent scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Citizenship by Investment: How to Buy a Passport? (Part 2 of 3)\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/eff92973d88e7645cd9c7a56bb470625.jpg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nIn Saint Lucia, no one cares if you have that 'genuine link' to the country. They will accept your donation, and you can complete the process. Yes, the Saint Lucian passport is not as prestigious and valuable for travelers as the Maltese one. But there's always room for compromise.<\/p>\n<p>Among the hybrids is Cyprus' offer, which requires both investment in real estate and a mandatory donation to state funds. One can also recall the offer from Montenegro (a newcomer in the golden passport market), which also requires both donations and the purchase of pre-approved real estate. <\/p>\n<h3>4. Banks, Bonds, and Business<\/h3>\n<p>\nIn recent years, governments have become increasingly creative, offering options for investors interested in citizenship. In Turkey, for example, instead of investing $250,000 in real estate, you could also deposit $500,000 in one or more banks for three years and gain the right to citizenship. Additionally, you can establish or purchase a business and hire 50 Turkish citizens to obtain citizenship in the same way. <\/p>\n<p>In both Antigua and Saint Lucia, you can invest in a local company and gain the right to citizenship. In Antigua, you will need to invest $400,000 plus fees (significantly higher compared to the fixed donation of $100,000), while in Saint Lucia, an investment of $1 million is required along with the creation of several jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in Saint Lucia and Malta, you can purchase zero-interest government bonds and hold them for a certain period to be eligible for a passport. In Malta, bond investments are one of many requirements under the hybrid option.
