At the GUADEC 2020 conference, a report was presented report<\/a><\/noindex>, dedicated to the development of the project \u201cGNOME OS<\/a><\/noindex>«. Initially<\/a><\/noindex> conceived<\/a><\/noindex> the plans for the development of \u201cGNOME OS\u201d as a platform for creating operating systems have now transformed into considering \u201cGNOME OS\u201d as a build that can be used for continuous integration, simplifying application testing in the codebase being developed for the next release, assessing the development progress, checking hardware compatibility, and experimenting with the user interface. <\/p>\n

Until recently builds of \u201cGNOME OS\u201d<\/a><\/noindex> were originally intended to run in virtual machines. The new initiative is focused on ensuring the use of \u201cGNOME OS\u201d on real hardware. New builds are being developed for x86_64 and ARM systems (Pinebook Pro, Rock 64, Raspberry Pi 4). Compared to the builds for virtual machines, support for booting on UEFI systems has been added, along with power management tools, printing support, Bluetooth, WiFi, sound cards, microphones, touchscreens, graphics cards, and webcams. Missing Flatpak portals for GTK+ have been added. Flatpak packages for application development (GNOME Builder + SDK) have been prepared. <\/p>\n

To form the system core in GNOME OS, the system OSTree<\/a><\/noindex> (the system image is atomically updated from a Git-like repository), similar to the projects Fedora Silverblue<\/a><\/noindex> and Endless OS<\/a><\/noindex>. Initialization is performed using Systemd. The graphical environment is based on Mesa drivers, Wayland, and XWayland. For installing additional applications, Flatpak is suggested. The installer used is Endless OS installer<\/a><\/noindex> based on GNOME Initial Setup<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n
