Published<\/a><\/noindex> release of the window manager xfwm4 4.14.3<\/a><\/noindex>, used in the Xfce desktop environment to manage window display on the screen, decorate windows, and facilitate their movement, closing, and resizing. <\/p>\n

In the new release, has added<\/a><\/noindex> support for the X11 extension XRes<\/a><\/noindex> (X-Resource), which is utilized<\/a><\/noindex> to query the X server for the PID of the application launched using sandbox isolation mechanisms. The support for XRes resolves the issue of forcing the termination of stuck client processes whose PIDs cannot be determined via the _NET_WM_PID property, as it reflects the process identifier within the isolated environment, which may differ from the identifier in the global namespace. <\/p>\n

The new release also has been closed<\/a><\/noindex> fixes a vulnerability that could lead to accessing already freed memory (use-after-free) and writing data outside of the allocated buffer when handling strings with settings. Additionally, in xfwm4 4.14.3, added<\/a><\/noindex> additional XError error handlers simplify troubleshooting issues related to XConfigureWindow requests.<\/p>\n

Some users after updating to version 4.14.3 have reported<\/a><\/noindex> crashes when attempting to start on FreeBSD, seemingly due to a new binding to libXres. Also in xfwm4, surfaced<\/a><\/noindex> there is an issue with detecting AMD graphics cards when the X11 extension XPresent is enabled for synchronizing output with the vertical blanking interval (vblank). XPresent was activated based on the presence of the AMD mask in the card name, while some cards are named<\/a><\/noindex> \"Radeon\" without mentioning the word \"AMD\" (for example, \"Radeon RX 570\"). For these cards, a vblank handler based on \"glx\" was enabled, which significantly lags in performance.<\/p>\n

For instance, using glx, playing 4K videos in mpv loads the GPU to 70% in high-quality mode and 50% in low-quality mode, while the load with XPresent drops to 50% and 30% respectively, which significantly affects power consumption and performance. The problem remains unresolved. To force enable XPresent, you can add the setting \/general\/vblank_mode in xfconf:<\/p>\n
