Available<\/a><\/noindex> release of the email client Thunderbird 78.1<\/a><\/noindex>, developed by the community and based on Mozilla technologies. Thunderbird 78<\/a><\/noindex> is based on the ESR release codebase Firefox 78<\/a><\/noindex>. The release is available only for direct download<\/a><\/noindex>, automatic updates from previous releases will only be available in version 78.2.<\/p>\n

The new version has been recognized as suitable for general use and has OpenPGP support enabled by default end-to-end encryption<\/a><\/noindex> of correspondence and email signing based on OpenPGP public keys. Previously, similar functionality was provided by the Enigmail add-on, which is no longer supported in the Thunderbird 78 branch. The built-in implementation is a new development prepared with the involvement of the Enigmail author. The main difference is the use of the library RNP<\/a><\/noindex>, which provides OpenPGP functionality instead of invoking the external GnuPG utility, and also employs its own key storage, incompatible with GnuPG key file formats, using the same master password protection as that used for accounts and S\/MIME keys.<\/p>\n

Other changes include the addition of a search field in the settings tab and the disabling of the dark background in the message reading interface. The interface for using OpenPGP has been expanded with a Key Wizard for key management and the ability to search for OpenPGP keys online. The address book import interface has been updated. Improved support for the dark theme. The issue with startup performance when a large number of color tags are present on email folders has been resolved (previously set colors will not be migrated to 78.1).<\/p>\n
