It has come to the point where we celebrate Sysadmin Day on the last Friday of July, which is today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Moreover, the holiday has a milestone today \u2014 the first Sysadmin Day was celebrated in 2000 in Chicago by an American 'universal IT specialist' named Ted Kekatos. It was a picnic outdoors involving staff from a small software company.<\/p>\n

The holiday reached Russia in 2006 when the All-Russian gathering of system administrators took place near Kaluga, followed by a similar event in Novosibirsk.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The profession continues to live and evolve, and today is a great opportunity to look at its evolution, current state, and the prospects offered by working as a sysadmin in the world of 'big IT'.\u00a0

Sysadmin: Yesterday and Today<\/h2>\n

\nToday, there are many variations of the practical responsibilities of a system administrator.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a small company with up to 100 employees, the same person may take on the responsibilities of a sysadmin, manager, and also be responsible for managing software licenses and maintaining office equipment, setting up Wi-Fi, responding to user requests, and taking charge of servers<\/a>. Most young colleagues, who are just starting their careers as system administrators, begin with the first and second lines of technical support \u2013 answering users' silly questions, gaining experience, and acquiring stress resilience skills. They are trained by more experienced system administrators who develop action algorithms for common troubleshooting scenarios, setups, etc. A person gradually learns, and if they are successful and enjoy it, they can slowly progress to the next level.<\/p>\n

Here we come to the question of whether system administration can be viewed as a portal to a more serious IT career, or if it\u2019s a sort of closed level where one can only develop horizontally?\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sky is the limit<\/h2>\n

\nFirst of all, I would note that for a system administrator in today\u2019s world, taking into account all the key areas of IT development, there is a fundamental opportunity to develop and grow professionally in any chosen direction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At first, you are a specialist in the IT support department, then you become a system administrator, and then the choice of specialization arises. You can go into programming, Unix administration, network engineering, or even become a systems IT architect, a security specialist, or even a project manager.<\/p>\n

Certainly, it's not that simple \u2013 first, you need to gain experience, pass exams in various training programs, obtain certifications, regularly prove that you are capable of delivering results and applying the knowledge and experience you have gained, and continually learn. If a system administrator chooses to develop in the direction of a systems architect, they can expect a salary no lower than that of IT leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Incidentally, a system administrator can also move into IT management. If you enjoy managing, collaborating, and guiding, then the path to project management is open to you.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alternatively, you can remain a system administrator at a very high professional level and develop in a specialized area, for example in a cloud provider, focusing on cloud infrastructure and virtualization tasks.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for system administrators, today there is no opportunity that is not available to colleagues \u2013 everyone chooses where to grow and develop further.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Is education overrated?<\/h2>\n

\nThe good news is that it can be said that the entry barrier into IT through the position of a system administrator does not require specific, say, mathematical education.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Among acquaintances, there have been many humanities graduates who managed to build a successful career starting from IT support and following the described path. System administration here becomes an excellent 'IT university.'\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course, technical education will not be superfluous and, on the contrary, will be very useful, but even in this case, one will need to go through specialized courses and gain experience on real cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Overall, if someone wants to become a system administrator, today it is not as closed a profession as, say, a fighter pilot. You can start moving toward your dream literally from your couch at home by studying literature or taking courses on your smartphone screen. A lot of information on any direction is available in the form of free and paid courses and articles.<\/p>\n

There is an opportunity to prepare for your first IT job at home and then easily get into IT support.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Certainly, those who studied related specialties at university have a starting advantage, but on the other hand, a person with a good mathematical education is unlikely to plan to go into support or system administration; they will probably choose another path \u2013 for example, Big Data. This significantly reduces competition at the initial entry level into the industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nOf course, a certain set of skills for successful work as a system administrator in 2020 is still necessary. Here they are.\u00a0<\/p>\n

First and foremost, it's the desire to work and grow in this profession, enthusiasm, productivity, and a constant willingness to learn. This is the key.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If a person has heard somewhere that being a sysadmin is cool but realizes after trying it out that they don't like the profession, it's better not to waste time and change specialties. The profession requires a serious and long-term commitment. In IT, things are constantly changing. One cannot just learn something once and rely on that knowledge for 10 years without doing anything or studying something new. \"Learn, learn, and learn again.\" \/V. I. Lenin\/<\/p>\n

The second important aspect of the skill set is a good memory and analytical skills. One constantly needs to keep a wealth of knowledge in mind, add new volumes and subject areas, creatively process them, and transform them into a sum of useful professional actions. It\u2019s also important to extract and apply knowledge and experience at the right moment.<\/p>\n

The third part is a minimal set of professional knowledge. For graduates of relevant technical universities, the following will be sufficient: knowledge of the basics of databases, the principles of operating systems (not in-depth, not at an architect level), an understanding of how software interacts with hardware, knowledge of network operation principles, as well as initial programming skills and basic knowledge of TCP\/IP, Unix, and Windows systems. If you can reinstall Windows and assemble your own computer, you're almost ready to become a sysadmin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One of the signs of the times today is automation; every sysadmin comes to the realization that certain processes are easier to script, thus reducing tedious manual labor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The fourth point is knowledge of the English language, which is an absolutely essential skill. It's better to enrich your personal knowledge base from primary sources; the language of IT today is English.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Finally, the fifth aspect of the 2020 sysadmin's skill set is multifunctionality. Everything is interconnected now; for example, both Windows and Unix are usually mixed within the same infrastructure across various blocks of tasks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nOne of the most obvious scenarios and trends in the career development of an administrator today is DevOps; at least, that's the stereotype.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In reality, it's not that simple: a DevOps specialist in modern IT is more of a programmer's assistant who constantly refines and 'fixes' the infrastructure, figuring out why code works with one version of a library but not with another. DevOps also automates various algorithms for deploying and testing products on either their own or cloud servers, helps select and configure the architecture of IT components. And of course, they can 'program' something and read someone else's code, but that's not their primary function.<\/p>\n

DevOps is essentially a slightly more specialized system administrator. That's how it's named, but the profession and its tasks essentially haven't changed. Again, this profession is trendy now, but those who haven't entered the field yet have a chance to do so over the next five years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today, an emerging trend in building an IT career from the level of administrator is robotics and automation (RPA), AI and Big Data, DevOps, and cloud administration.<\/p>\n

The profession of a system administrator is always at the intersection of various subject areas; it's a kind of competency and skill constructor for self-assembly. It would be useful to acquire skills in stress resilience and basic knowledge of psychology. Don't forget that you work not only with IT but also with people, who can be very diverse. You'll also have to explain more than once why your IT solution is better than others and why it should be the one used.<\/p>\n

I would add that this profession will remain in demand indefinitely. This is because all the promises made by major IT vendors, announcing the release of \"fully self-sufficient platforms and systems that will not break, will self-service and self-repair,\" have not yet been validated by practice. Oracle, Microsoft, and other large companies speak of this frequently. However, nothing of the sort is happening, as information systems remain extremely diverse and heterogeneous in terms of platforms, languages, protocols, and more. No artificial intelligence is currently capable of configuring the smooth operation of complex IT architectures flawlessly and without human intervention.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This means that system administrators will be needed for a very long time, with very high demands on their professionalism.\u00a0<\/p>\n
