Peter Robinson (Peter Robinson<\/a><\/noindex>) from the Red Hat Release Engineering Team announced<\/a><\/noindex> proposal<\/a><\/noindex> discusses the acceptance of the IoT distribution variant into the official editions of Fedora 33. Thus, starting with Fedora 33 Fedora IoT<\/a><\/noindex> it will be delivered alongside Fedora Workstation and Fedora Server. The proposal has not yet been officially approved, but its publication was preliminarily agreed upon by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspects of the Fedora distribution development, so its acceptance can be considered a formality.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the Fedora IoT edition is designed for use on Internet of Things (IoT) devices and is based on the same technologies used in Fedora CoreOS<\/a><\/noindex>, Fedora Atomic Host<\/a><\/noindex> and Fedora Silverblue<\/a><\/noindex>. The distribution offers a minimal system environment, with updates delivered atomically by replacing the entire system image, without breaking it down into separate packages. To ensure integrity, the entire system image is verified with a digital signature. To isolate applications from the main system it is recommended to<\/a><\/noindex> isolated containers are utilized (with podman used for management). Additionally,
\ncustomization<\/a><\/noindex> of the system environment for specific applications and devices is possible.<\/p>\n

The system environment is formed using technology OSTree<\/a><\/noindex>, where the system image is atomically updated from a Git-like repository, allowing version control methods to be applied to the distribution's components (for example, the system can be quickly rolled back to a previous state). RPM packages are translated into the OSTree repository via a special layer called rpm-ostree<\/a><\/noindex>. Pre-built images are provided<\/a><\/noindex> for x86_64 and Aarch64 architectures (support for ARMv7 is also promised to be added soon). Support is claimed<\/a><\/noindex> support for Raspberry Pi 3 Model B\/B+,
\n96boards Rock960 Consumer Edition, Pine64 A64-LTS, Pine64 Rockpro64 and Rock64, Up Squared, as well as for x86_64 and aarch64 virtual machines.<\/p>\n
