Mozilla announced<\/a><\/noindex> on the intention to activate the Enhanced Tracking Protection mechanism ETP 2.0<\/a><\/noindex> (Enhanced Tracking Protection). Initially, support for ETP 2.0 was added in Firefox 79 but was turned off by default. In the coming weeks, this mechanism is planned to be made available to all user categories.<\/p>\n

The main innovation of ETP 2.0 is the addition of protection against tracking via redirects<\/a><\/noindex>. To bypass the blocking of third-party Cookies installed by components loaded in the context of the current page, ad networks, social networks, and search engines have started redirecting users to an intermediate page when clicking on links, from where they are then forwarded to the target site. Since the intermediate page opens by itself, outside the context of another site, tracking Cookies can be freely set on such a page. <\/p>\n

To combat this method, ETP 2.0 has added blocking based on the domain list provided by Disconnect.me service<\/a><\/noindex>, which uses tracking through redirects. For sites that perform such tracking, Firefox will daily clear Cookies and data in internal storage (localStorage, IndexedDB, Cache API and etc.<\/a><\/noindex>).

Since this behavior can lead to the loss of authentication cookies on sites whose domains are used not only for tracking but also for authentication, an exception has been added. If a user has explicitly interacted with the site (for example, by scrolling content), then cookie clearing will occur not once a day, but once every 45 days, which may require re-logging into services like Google or Facebook every 45 days. To manually disable automatic cookie clearing, the parameter \"privacy.purge_trackers.enabled\" can be used in about:config.<\/p>\n

Additionally, it can be noted intent<\/a><\/noindex> Google to enable today blocking of unacceptable ads<\/a><\/noindex>displayed while watching videos. If Google does not cancel the previously set deadlines for implementation, Chrome will block the following types of ads: Ads of any duration that interrupt video playback halfway through; Long ads (longer than 31 seconds) displayed before the video starts, without the ability to skip them after 5 seconds; Displaying large text ads or promotional images over the video if they cover more than 20% of the video or appear in the middle of the window (in the central third of the window). <\/p>\n
