As an emulator, QEMU allows the execution of programs compiled for one hardware platform on a system with a completely different architecture, for example, running an ARM application on an x86-compatible PC. In virtualization mode, QEMU's code execution performance in an isolated environment is close to that of a native system due to direct instruction execution on the CPU and the involvement of the Xen hypervisor or KVM module.

Originally, the project was created by Fabrice Bellard with the aim of enabling the execution of Linux executables compiled for the x86 platform on architectures other than x86. Over the years of development, support for full emulation of 14 hardware architectures has been added, and the number of emulated hardware devices has exceeded 400. More than 2,500 changes from 235 developers were made in preparation for version 5.1.

Key <noindex>improvements</noindex>, added in QEMU 5.1:

Support for CPU emulation based on the <noindex>AVR</noindex>architecture has been added. Support for Arduino Duemilanove (ATmega168), Arduino Mega 2560 (ATmega2560),
Arduino Mega (ATmega1280), and Arduino UNO (ATmega328P) has been implemented.

In the ARM architecture emulator, the ability to hot-unplug memory and hot-plug nvdimm memory for guest systems with ACPI has been added. Support for ARMv8.2 extensions has been implemented. <noindex>TTS2UXN</noindex> and <noindex>ARMv8.5 MemTag</noindex>. Support for the sonorapass-bmc board has been provided.

In the MIPS architecture emulator, support has been added for Loongson 3A CPUs (R1 and R4). Performance improvements for FPU and MSA instruction emulation have been made.

In the RISC-V architecture emulator, support for SiFive E34 and Ibex CPUs has been added. Support for HiFive1 revB and OpenTitan boards has been implemented. For Spike machines, support for more than one CPU has been provided.

The PowerPC architecture emulator now supports error recovery in guest systems using FWNMI.

For the s390 architecture, KVM support for secure virtualization (safe execution mode) has been added.

In the x86 architecture emulator, virtualization overhead for unmodified guest systems running Windows has been reduced by providing an ACPI WAET (Windows ACPI Emulated Device Table). Improved support for acceleration <noindex>HVF</noindex> for macOS.

The block device driver now supports virtual storage devices with logical and physical block sizes of 2MB.

Support has been added for passing passwords and keys for encryption via the Linux kernel keyring using new type objects called «secret-keyring».

Support for the zstd compression algorithm has been implemented for the qcow2 format.

The qemu-img utility has introduced a new command ‘bitmap’ for manipulating persistent bitmaps in qcow2 files. Key management for LUKS (keyslot) has also been implemented in qemu-img along with additional options for the «map» command (—start-offset, —max-length) and the «convert» command (—bitmaps). The «measure» command now outputs information about the size of persistent bitmaps in qcow2 files.

The NVMe driver now supports Persistent Memory Regions introduced in the NVMe 1.4 specification.

In virtio for guest systems with the classic TCG (Tiny Code Generator), the use of processes has been implemented. <noindex>vhost-user</noindex>, including virtiofsd. The vhost-user has added the VHOST_USER_PROTOCOL_F_CONFIGURE_MEM_SLOTS extension, which allows the registration of more than 8 memory slots.

<noindex><a rel="nofollow"
