Based on available data, in addition to accounts noted for suspicious behavior, Instagram will verify accounts of individuals whose majority of followers are located in another country relative to their location. Additionally, identity verification will be conducted upon detection of signs of automation, which will help identify bots.<\/p>\n<p>Account holders in such situations will be asked to <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/293775921768331\/\" target=\"_blank\">verify their identity<\/a><\/noindex>, by providing the appropriate electronic identification. If this is not done, Instagram's administration may reduce the visibility of posts from these accounts in the Instagram feed, or even block them. Instagram and its parent company Facebook, which owns the namesake social network, are increasing their efforts to combat misinformation ahead of the upcoming U.S. presidential elections this year. Facebook already has similar rules in place, requiring the owners of popular pages to verify their identities.<\/p>\n<p>Instagram has long been criticized for not adequately fighting the spread of misinformation within the platform and curbing attempts to manipulate public opinion.
