Implementation of the ZFS file system in the main branch of FreeBSD (HEAD) translated<\/a><\/noindex> for the use of the OpenZFS code<\/a>, developing the code base «ZFS on Linux<\/a><\/noindex>» as a reference version of ZFS. Among the features that became available in FreeBSD after switching to OpenZFS: an advanced quota system, dataset encryption, a separate selection of allocation classes, the use of vector processor instructions to accelerate RAIDZ implementation and checksum calculations, support for the ZSTD compression algorithm, multihost mode (MMP<\/a><\/noindex>, Multi Modifier Protection), improved command line tools, and fixes for many issues related to race conditions and locks.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s recall that in December 2018, FreeBSD developers proposed a initiative<\/a><\/noindex> transitioning to the ZFS implementation from the project \u201cZFS on Linux<\/a><\/noindex>» (ZoL), around which all activity related to the development of ZFS has recently been focused. The stagnation of the ZFS code base from the Illumos project (a fork of OpenSolaris) was mentioned as the reason for the migration, as it was previously used as the basis for transferring ZFS-related changes into FreeBSD. <\/p>\n

The main contribution to the support of the ZFS codebase in Illumos had until recently been made by Delphix, which is developing the operating system DelphixOS<\/a><\/noindex> (the Illumos fork). Three years ago, Delphix decided to transition to «ZFS on Linux», which resulted in the stagnation of ZFS from the Illumos project and the concentration of all related development activity in the «ZFS on Linux» project, which is now regarded as the primary implementation.
