This year, the online format allows us to move away from the concept of presentations where speakers describe how they used the "God mode" in DevOps. Most of us don’t have such cheat codes; we face common standard problems with minimal resources. For most of us, DevOps is not perfect — that’s what we want to showcase. We’ll discuss what to expect next.
<noindex></noindex>

Program

In the program <noindex>DevOps Live 2020</noindex> there are 15 confirmed activities, with around 30 more being prepared (we are adding more interactivity, for example, adapting speaker presentations to the online format).

The program is designed not only for our beloved DevOps engineers and system administrators but also for decision-makers: product owners, technical directors, CEOs, and team leads. Therefore, we expect participants to come not just to listen to "how others do it," but with the intention of making changes within their organizations.

There will be a total of 11 types of formats:

presentations;

homework assignments;

workshops;

discussions;

round table;

"confession booth";

surveys;

lightning talks;

"holivar";

"cyber range."

Not all of these formats are familiar or conventional, which is why we call them "anti-formats." So what are these formats?

Presentations, workshops, and lightning talks

Presentations will not follow the classic online format or the YouTube broadcast format. We are encouraging speakers to engage with the audience at a higher level of interactivity. For example, when we listen to a traditional presentation and have a question, by the end of the talk, we might forget it. But online, things are different.

At DevOps Live 2020, each participant will be able to write their questions in the chat instead of keeping them in mind and missing the rest of the presentation. Each speaker will have a section moderator from the organizing committee, who will assist in collecting and processing questions. The speaker will pause during their talk to answer questions (though there will, of course, be traditional Q&A at the end).

The speaker will also pose specific questions to the audience, such as, "Who has faced setting up a service mesh outside of Kubernetes?" Additionally, the moderator will include participants in the broadcast during case discussions.

Note. Recently, we mentioned that the organizing committee of DevOps Live 2020 and Express 42 launched the first study on the state of the DevOps industry in Russia. More than 500 people have completed the survey. We will learn the results of the survey in the first two days, presented in a report prepared by Igor Kurochkin under the guidance of Sasha Titov. The report will set the tone for the entire conference.

Lightning. This is a shorter version of the presentations—lasting 10-15 minutes, for example, "Here's how I deploy a 10 TB Oracle DB in Kubernetes." After the "introductory" part comes the most interesting part—engagement with the participants. Of course, moderators will be present so that people can discuss controversial topics without conflicts. We already have some requests involving exotic topics that we are ready to discuss.

Workshops. These are the workshops. While presentations and lightning talks devote enough time to theory, workshops have minimal theory. The presenter briefly outlines some background information, and participants split into micro-groups to practice. Workshops are a natural continuation of the presentations.

Surveys, tests, and "home assignments"

Surveys. We will send participants links to Google forms in advance—surveys, for instance, to collect "bloody" cases of digital transformation (yours, of course). They will help structure their thoughts regarding digital transformation, and for us, prepare a foundation for discussions and debates.

Some surveys are part of a separate activity called "home assignment." The conference DevOps Live 2020 is divided into three parts:

2 days of activities;

5 days of home assignments, independent work of participants, surveys, and tests;

2 days of activities.

Right in the middle of the conference, we will give out "homework". This will include engineering tasks, surveys, and tests. Tests These will help you get a "final report" based on the conference. For example, a test called "Check What Kind of DevOps Engineer You Are", after which it will be clear how good you are in DevOps, with a rating assigned (of course, this is a lighthearted test).

All homework (as well as the entire program) is united by the common theme of DevOps — digital transformation. Completing the homework is not mandatory. However, some discussions, round tables, and presentations in the schedule will be based on the results of these assignments. But only some, because if no one does anything, we won’t cancel the next two days :)

Discussions: debates, round tables, "confessionals" and "moot courts"

Discussions. This is an open "meeting". The host sets the topic, there is a main "topic holder", and other participants can discuss and express their opinions.

Round Table. The format is similar to discussions, except that the topic is discussed by the plenary session. Round table participants – are a limited number of people. Naturally, questions from the audience are also anticipated, but not in real time.

"Confessional". This is an analysis of the sections "What I Want to Change" and the cases "How We Implemented and Went Through DevOps Transformation", as well as homework.

"Confessional" is voluntary. If a participant expresses a desire for us to publicly analyze their plans for digital transformation, which they prepared while participating in the conference activities, we will discuss their plans, provide comments, and give recommendations. This is a format for the strong-willed.

We have a button "<noindex>Ask the PC</noindex>" — use it to sign up for the confessional. This way, the PC can prepare a time slot in advance, check the equipment, sound, and your camera.

You can sign up anonymously, but anonymous questionnaires may contain too recognizable cases. Therefore, it's important for the PC to contact you to depersonalize the story.

"Moot Court". Everyone is familiar with moot courts — discussions in an extreme form. For example, whether DevOps is needed in an enterprise or whether a DevOps engineer should possess engineering skills can be discussed in the context of lightning discussions.

But in such topics, there is always something to discuss and to prove one's position, so the PC will prepare 3-4 topics in advance for the 'debate'. This is an online platform with a moderator that operates throughout the day. The moderator acts as the host in a 'World Café' format. Their task is to keep a briefing of what has already been said on this topic in the form of an online document, for example, in Miro. When new participants arrive, the moderator will show all newcomers the briefing.

Participants will enter the debate space and see what has already been expressed; they can add their opinion and communicate with other participants. At the end of the day, the moderator will compile a digest of what emerged from the stream of discussion on the pressing topic.

Cyber Range

At DevOps Live 2020, we will dedicate special time to security. In addition to presentations by leading experts in the field of security, there will be a powerful workshop in the 'Security' block called Cyber Range. This is a masterclass where participants will actively engage in hacking and penetration for two hours.

The host will prepare a special environment.

Participants will receive access and connect from their laptops or PCs.

The host (moderator) will explain how to check for vulnerabilities, conduct penetration or privilege escalation, and will demonstrate.

Participants will repeat, and the host will answer questions, and everyone will discuss the topic together.

Participants will understand the mechanisms, tools, and proactive actions that can protect their infrastructure from malicious unauthorized penetrations, and how to secure their infrastructure so that such a breach becomes impossible.

Unconventional DevOps Conf

There is one more nuance. Presentations and masterclasses, as at regular conferences, are usually recorded and can be viewed later. However, interactive formats cannot be repeated. It won't be possible to record all the rooms in Zoom, Spatial Chat, or Roomer where discussions, debates, and lightning talks are held (let's remind that there are about 50 activities). Therefore, in this sense, it will be a unique event. It will happen only once, and there will never be another like it.

It's essential to participate in such events personally to create value, unlike presentations that can be watched on video, for instance, on our YouTube channel. When people collaborate, each experience is unique. We aim to make the conference engaging and more beneficial. Learning occurs when we tackle our challenges.

If:

you have a monolith;

you are facing bureaucratic hurdles at work;

you are still taking your first steps towards improving processes, reliability, and infrastructure quality;

you don't know how to scale DevOps from one team/product to the entire company...

...join DevOps Live — together we will find answers to these challenges. <noindex>Book your tickets</noindex> (Price increase on September 14) and explore the program — we are continually adding information about accepted presentations and activities on the pages of "<noindex>Reports</noindex>" and "<noindex>Meetups</noindex>".
