Here's a general overview of the process:

DNS records are signed using a pair of private and public keys.

DNSSEC responses contain the requested record along with the signature and the public key.

Then <noindex>the public key </noindex>is used to verify the authenticity of the record and the signature.

DNS Security and DNSSEC

DNSSEC is a tool for verifying the integrity of DNS queries. It does not affect DNS privacy. In other words, DNSSEC can assure you that the answer to your DNS query has not been tampered with, but any malicious actor can see these results in the form in which they were transmitted to you.

DoT — DNS over TLS

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a cryptographic protocol that protects transmitted information over a network connection. Once a secure TLS connection is established between a client and a server, the transmitted data is encrypted, and no intermediaries can see it.

<noindex>TLS </noindex>is most commonly used as part of HTTPS (SSL) in your web browser, as requests are sent to secure HTTP servers.

DNS-over-TLS (DoT) uses the TLS protocol to encrypt the UDP traffic of regular DNS queries.
Encrypting these requests in plaintext helps protect users or applications making queries from several attacks.

MitM, or 'man-in-the-middle': without encryption, an intermediary system sitting between the client and the authoritative DNS server can potentially send back false or harmful information to the client in response to a query.

Eavesdropping and Tracking: without the encryption of requests, intermediary systems can easily see which websites a particular user or application is accessing. Although from DNS alone, you cannot determine the specific page being visited on a site, just knowing the requested domains is enough to build a profile of a system or individual.

Source: <noindex>University of California Irvine</noindex>

DoH — DNS over HTTPS

DNS-over-HTTPS (DNS over HTTPS, DoH) is an experimental protocol promoted jointly by Mozilla and Google. Its goals are similar to the DoT protocol — enhancing online privacy by encrypting DNS queries and responses.

Standard DNS queries are transmitted via UDP. Queries and responses can be tracked using tools such as <noindex>Wireshark</noindex>. DoT encrypts these queries, but they are still identified as fairly distinctive UDP traffic on the network.

DoH takes a different approach and sends encrypted queries for network node name resolution over HTTPS connections, which appear on the network like any other web request.

This distinction has significant implications for system administrators and the future of name resolution.

DNS filtering is a common method for filtering web traffic to protect users from phishing attacks, malware-distributing sites, or other potentially harmful internet activities within corporate networks. The DoH protocol bypasses these filters, potentially exposing users and the network to higher risks.

In the current name resolution model, every device on the network receives DNS queries to some extent from the same location (from the specified DNS server). DoH, and particularly its implementation by Firefox, suggests that this may change in the future. Each application on a computer could receive data from different DNS sources, significantly complicating troubleshooting, security, and risk modeling.

Source: <noindex>www.varonis.com/blog/what-is-powershell</noindex>

What is the difference between DNS over TLS and DNS over HTTPS?

Let's start with DNS over TLS (DoT). The focus here is that the original DNS protocol is unchanged, simply transmitted securely over a protected channel. DoH, on the other hand, places DNS in an HTTP format before executing requests.

DNS monitoring alerts

The ability to effectively monitor DNS traffic in your network for suspicious anomalies is crucial for early breach detection. Using a tool like Varonis Edge will keep you informed of all important metrics and allow you to create profiles for each account in your network. You can configure alert generation based on combinations of actions occurring over a specific time period.

Monitoring changes in DNS, account locations, as well as first-use facts and access to confidential data, along with out-of-hours activity, are just a few indicators that can be correlated to create a more comprehensive detection picture.

Source: <a
