At the XDC2020 conference (X.Org Developers Conference) announced<\/a><\/noindex> about the inclusion of ARM in the development process of the project Panfrost<\/a><\/noindex>, which is developing an open driver for Mali graphics cores. ARM has expressed willingness<\/a><\/noindex> to provide driver developers with the necessary information and documentation for a better understanding of the hardware and to focus on development without wasting time deciphering the mysteries involved in reverse engineering binary drivers. Previously, a similar situation occurred with Qualcomm's involvement in the Freedreno<\/a><\/noindex>, which is developing a free driver for Qualcomm Adreno GPUs.<\/p>\n

ARM's participation will help achieve stability in the implementation ready for widespread use and ensure more comprehensive support for Mali GPU specific internal instructions by providing firsthand information about chip architecture. The availability of internal documentation will also allow maximum performance, full compliance with specifications, and coverage of all available features of Midgard and Bifrost GPUs.<\/p>\n

The first changes, prepared based on information obtained from ARM, are already been submitted<\/a><\/noindex> in the driver codebase. In particular,
\nwork has been done to canonicalize the instruction packing operations and completely redesign the disassembler for a more accurate reflection of the Bifrost GPU instruction set architecture and compliance with the terminology adopted at ARM.<\/p>\n

The Panfrost driver was founded in 2018 by Alyssa Rosenzweig, who works at Collabora, and has been developed based on the reverse engineering of the original ARM drivers. Currently, the driver supports operation with chips based on the Midgard (Mali-T6xx, Mali-T7xx, Mali-T8xx) and Bifrost (Mali G3x, G5x, G7x) microarchitectures.
