Introduced<\/a><\/noindex> Release of the utility for organizing data search in text files \u2014 GNU Grep 3.5<\/a><\/noindex>The new version restores the old behavior of the option «—files-without-match» (-L), which was changed in grep 3.2 for consistency with the git-grep utility. In grep 3.2, a search was considered successful if the processed file was mentioned in the list, but now the behavior has returned to one where the success of the search depends not on the presence of the file in the list but on matching the search string.<\/p>\n

The message output when matches are found in binary files has been revised. The message now reads «grep: FOO: binary file matches» and is displayed in stderr to avoid overlaps with regular output (for instance, the command ‘grep PATTERN FILE | wc’ previously miscounted the number of matches due to the warning being output to the standard stream). Similarly, the messages «grep: FOO: warning: recursive directory loop» and «grep: FOO: input file is also the output» have been redirected to stderr.<\/p>\n
