Introduced<\/a><\/noindex> release of the display server Mir 2.1<\/a><\/noindex>, which is still being developed by Canonical, despite the discontinuation of the Unity shell and the Ubuntu edition for smartphones. Mir remains in demand for Canonical's projects and is now positioned as a solution for embedded devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). Mir can be used as a compositing server for Wayland, allowing any applications that utilize Wayland (for example, those built with GTK3\/4, Qt5, or SDL2) to run in Mir-based environments. Installation packages are prepared for Ubuntu 18.04-20.10 (PPA<\/a><\/noindex>) and Fedora 30\/31\/32<\/a><\/noindex>. The project's code is distributed<\/a><\/noindex> is licensed under GPLv2.<\/p>\n

The new version has improved functionality with the Wayland protocol and added support for new experimental protocols: zwp_linux_dmabuf_unstable_v1<\/a><\/noindex> for creating wl_buffers using the DMABUF mechanism and wlr-foreign-toplevel-management<\/a><\/noindex> for connecting custom panels and window switches. Support for linux-dmabuf has resolved rendering issues on Raspberry Pi 4 boards, and wlr-foreign-toplevel-management has expanded shell capabilities. The implementation of the wlr_layer_shell_v1<\/a><\/noindex>protocol, proposed by the developers of the Sway desktop environment, has been updated and is applied during the porting process of the MATE shell to Wayland. <\/p>\n

Among unrelated changes to Wayland, the implementation of support for Raspberry Pi 4 boards is noted, along with performance improvements in the Mir-on-Wayland platform, enhancements for launching X11 applications through Xwayland, and the ability to add X11 applications to configured shells, such as egmde-confined-desktop.<\/p>\n
