To implement the proposed initiative, the ARDC (Amateur Radio Digital Communications) Foundation has already allocated a grant of $150,000 to the SFC organization.<\/p>\n<p>The work is planned to be conducted in three directions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/sfconservancy.org\/copyleft-compliance\/enforcement-strategy.html\">Enforcement<\/a><\/noindex> of manufacturers to comply with GPL and eliminate existing violations.\n<li class=\"l\"> Conducting joint promotion with other organizations of the idea that compliance with GPL is an important detail for protecting privacy and consumer rights.\n<li class=\"l\"> Development of the project <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/sfconservancy.org\/copyleft-compliance\/firmware-liberation.html\">Firmware Liberation<\/a><\/noindex> for creating alternative firmware.\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Bradley Kuhn, the executive director of SFC, previous efforts to persuade the necessity of GPL compliance through education and awareness have been unsuccessful, and today there is widespread disregard for GPL requirements in the Internet of Things device industry. To address the current situation, it is proposed to use more stringent legal measures to hold violators accountable for failing to meet copyleft license conditions.<\/p>\n<p>By using copyleft licensed code in their products, manufacturers are obliged to provide the source code, including derivative work code and installation instructions, in order to preserve software freedom. Without such actions, users lose control over the software. To correct errors, remove unnecessary functionality to protect their privacy, or replace firmware, users must have the ability to make changes and reinstall software on their devices.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past year, the SFC organization has identified a series of GPL violations by manufacturers of embedded electronics, which cannot be resolved amicably and will require legal action. They plan to select one of these violators who does not provide the code necessary for rebuilding and installing Linux and to conduct a landmark trial in the USA. If the defendant remedies the violation, meets all requirements, and commits to complying with the GPL in the future, the SFC is ready to conclude the legal proceedings immediately.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the efforts to enforce GPL compliance, under the Firmware Liberation project, they plan to select a specific class of products from the category of Linux-based embedded solutions and create alternative free firmware for them, based on the code released by the manufacturer as a result of eliminating GPL violations, similar to how the OpenWrt project was created based on the firmware code for the WRT54G. Ultimately, the experience of creating such successful projects as <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/openwrt.org\/\">OpenWrt<\/a><\/noindex> and <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samygo.tv\/\">SamyGo<\/a><\/noindex>, is planned to be transferred to other categories of devices.<\/p>\n<p>It has been noted that the SFC organization has identified GPL violations in Linux firmware for devices such as refrigerators, baby monitors, virtual assistants, soundbars, doorbells, security cameras, automotive systems, AV receivers, and televisions. Creating alternative firmware for such devices or joining efforts with existing projects focused on developing alternative firmware, whose work is hampered due to the unavailability of device-specific
