If you're just getting started with Cloud Run, take a look at the updated list of Cloud Run examples in Cloud Code. Examples are available in Java, NodeJS, Python, Go, and .NET. Based on these, you'll be able to start writing your own code following all the recommendations right away.

All examples include a Dockerfile so you won't have to waste time figuring out container configurations. If you're migrating an existing service to Cloud Run, you might not have worked with Dockerfiles yet. No worries! The Cloud Code service supports <noindex>Google Cloud Buildpack</noindex>, allowing you to containerize the service directly in your code. A Dockerfile is not required. Cloud Code has everything you need to deploy your service to Cloud Run.

Developing and debugging Cloud Run services in a local environment

Before deploying the service in Google Cloud, you will likely want to test it on your computer to see how it works, make necessary adjustments, and debug errors. When developing Cloud Run services, you need to continuously build and deploy in the cloud to test changes in a representative Cloud Run environment. You can debug the code locally by connecting a debugger; however, since this is not done at the container level, you will need to set up tools locally. You can run the container in a local environment using Docker, but the command required for this is too lengthy and does not reflect the characteristics of the production environment.

Cloud Code includes a Cloud Run emulator that allows you to develop and debug Cloud Run services locally. According to <noindex>a study</noindex>the DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) study, high-performing software delivery teams encounter failures when making changes seven times less often than their less effective counterparts. With the ability to iterate code quickly locally and debug it in a representative environment, you can promptly identify errors early in the development process rather than during continuous integration or, worse yet, in production.

When running code in the Cloud Run emulator, you can enable view mode. Each time you save files, your service will be redeployed in the emulator for continuous development.

First run of the Cloud Run Emulator:

Debugging Cloud Run services with Cloud Code is done just like in your familiar development environment. Execute the command "Debug on Cloud Run Emulator" in VS Code (or select the configuration "Cloud Run: Run Locally" and run the command "Debug" in IntelliJ) and simply set breakpoints in your code. Once a breakpoint is activated in your container, you can switch between commands, hover over variable properties, and check logs from the container.

Debugging a Cloud Run service with Cloud Code in VS Code and IntelliJ idea:

Deploying a service in Cloud Run

After you test all changes made to the Cloud Run service code in the local environment, you will need to create a container and deploy it in Cloud Run.

Deploying a service from the development environment is straightforward.
