Today, we will talk about vRealize Automation. This article is primarily aimed at users who have not previously encountered this solution, so we will introduce its features and share usage scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>vRealize Automation allows customers to enhance adaptability, performance, and operational efficiency by simplifying the IT environment, optimizing IT processes, and providing a ready-to-implement automation platform for DevOps principles.<\/p>\n<p>Although the new <strong>version 8<\/strong> of vRealize Automation was<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/vRealize-Automation\/8.0\/rn\/vRealize-Automation-80-release-notes.html\"> <u>officially released<\/u><\/a><\/noindex> back in the fall of 2019, there is still little up-to-date information about this solution and its updated features in the Russian-speaking web. We will address this injustice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is vRealize Automation?<\/h2>\n<p>It is a software product within the VMware ecosystem. It allows for the automation of certain aspects of managing your infrastructure and applications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, vRealize Automation is a portal through which administrators, developers, and business users can request IT services and manage cloud and on-premises resources while adhering to the required policies.<\/p>\n<p>vRealize Automation is available as a cloud SaaS service, or it can be installed in the customer's private cloud.<\/p>\n<p>The most common scenario for on-premises projects is a comprehensive installation on a VMware stack: vSphere, ESXi hosts, vCenter Server, vRealize Operations, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For example, your business needs to flexibly and quickly create virtual machines. It's not always practical to manually configure addresses, switch networks, install operating systems, and perform other routine tasks. vRealize Automation allows you to create and publish element templates for deploying machines. These can be simple templates or complex ones, including a stack of custom applications. The ready-published templates are placed in the service catalog. <\/p>\n<h3>vRealize Automation Portals<\/h3>\n<p>After installing vRealize Automation, the chief administrator gains access to the management console. In it, a large number of cloud service portals can be created for different user categories. For example, one for administrators, another for network engineers, and a third for managers. Each portal can have its own blueprints. Each user group can only access services approved for them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Blueprints are described using easily readable YAML scripts and support version tracking and Git processes: <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Introduction to vRealize Automation\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/fc16fb3c95aecff068b56b09eb4029aa.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can read more about the internal structure and capabilities of vRealize Automation<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.vmware.com\/management\/\"> in a series of blog posts <u>here<\/u><\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n<h3>vRealize Automation 8: What\u2019s New<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Introduction to vRealize Automation\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/3d03b9d58d9e982aebe057c949ebe674.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/>16 Key Services of vRealize Automation 8 in One Screenshot<\/p>\n<p>16 Key Services of vRealize Automation 8 in One Screenshot<\/p>\n<p>You can review detailed release notes<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/vRealize-Automation\/8.1\/rn\/vRealize-Automation-81-releasenotes.html\"> <u>on the VMware page<\/u><\/a><\/noindex>, and we will highlight the most interesting features of the new version:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>vRealize Automation 8 has been completely rewritten and is built on a microservices architecture.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>To install, you need to have VMware Identity Manager and LifeCycle Manager in the infrastructure. You can use Easy Install, which will sequentially install and configure the components.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>vRealize Automation 8 does not require the installation of additional IaaS servers based on MS Windows Server, as was the case in versions 7.x.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>vRealize Automation is installed on Photon OS 3.0. All key services run as K8S Pods. Containers within the pods operate on Docker.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>PostgreSQL is the only supported DBMS. Pods use Persistent Volume for data storage. A separate database is allocated for key services.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let's go through the components of vRealize Automation 8.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cloud Assembly<\/strong> is used for deploying VMs, applications, and other services in various public clouds and vCenter Servers. A vast number of integrations are available, including Jenkins, Bamboo, Git, Docker, Jira, and others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Service Broker<\/strong> is a service that provides a catalog for enterprise users:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Introduction to vRealize Automation\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/d63ff67ff1156e355d86a8af27d73cb5.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Introduction to vRealize Automation\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/a8f74236ad968688831d8ac26d8420f7.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Service Broker, administrators can set up approval policies based on certain parameters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Use Cases for vRealize Automation<\/h2>\n<h3>All in One<\/h3>\n<p>Currently, there are many different virtualization solutions worldwide\u2014VMware, Hyper-V, KVM. Businesses often resort to global clouds like Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud. Managing this \"zoo\" becomes increasingly complex each year. Some may find this problem artificial\u2014why not use just one solution within the company? The truth is, for some tasks, a budget-friendly KVM may suffice. More serious projects may require the full functionality of VMware. It can be impossible to select just one due to economic reasons at the very least.<\/p>\n<p>As the number of solutions used increases, so does the volume of tasks. For instance, you might need to automate software delivery, manage configurations, and deploy applications. Before the advent of vRealize Automation, there wasn't a single tool capable of \"absorbing\" the management of all these platforms in a unified manner.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Introduction to vRealize Automation\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/83d974428c2d7606182f5c76afbeec6f.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/>No matter what stack of solutions and platforms you use, there's an option to manage them through a single portal.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what stack of solutions and platforms you use, there's an option to manage them through a single portal.<\/p>\n<h3>Automate Standard Processes<\/h3>\n<p>Within vRealize Automation, a scenario like this is possible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>An administrator<\/strong> <strong>of the application<\/strong> needs to deploy an additional VM. With vRealize Automation, he won't have to do anything manually or coordinate with the appropriate specialists. It will be enough to click a hypothetical button \"I want a VM, and I want it fast,\" and the request will be sent on.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The request is received by <strong>the system administrator<\/strong>. He reviews the request, checks if there are enough available resources, and approves it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Next in line is <strong>the manager<\/strong>. His task is to assess whether the company is ready to allocate funds for the project's implementation. If everything is in order, he will also click Approve.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We intentionally chose the simplest possible process and reduced the number of its links to highlight the main idea:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>vRealize Automation, in addition to IT processes, addresses the realm of business processes. Each specialist 'closes' their part of the task in a conveyor mode.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The example task can be solved using other systems \u2014 for instance, ServiceNow or Jira. However, vRealize Automation is 'closer' to the infrastructure and allows for more complex cases than simply deploying a virtual machine. It can automatically check for available space in storage with a 'one-click' mode, creating new volumes if necessary. Technically, it's even possible to build a custom solution and script requests to the cloud provider.<\/p>\n<h3>DevOps and CI\/CD<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Introduction to vRealize Automation\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/59c691aff274c9859344d436106dc4be.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition to bringing all platforms and clouds into a single window, vRealize Automation allows you to manage all available environments in accordance with DevOps principles. Service developers can develop and release applications without being tied to any specific platform.<\/p>\n<p>As seen in the diagram, above the platform level is <strong>Developer Ready Infrastructure<\/strong>, which implements integration and delivery functions, as well as management of various scenarios for deploying IT systems regardless of the platform used at the lower level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consumption<\/strong>, or the service consumer level, represents an environment for user\/administrator interaction with the end IT systems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Content Development <\/strong>allows for interaction with the Dev level and manages changes, versioning, and access to the repository.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Service Catalog <\/strong>enables the delivery of services to end consumers: reverting\/publishing new ones and receiving feedback.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Projects <\/strong>allows for the establishment of internal IT decision-making processes, where each change or delegation of rights goes through an approval process, which is pertinent for enterprise companies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A Bit of Practice<\/h2>\n<p>Theory and use cases are over. Let's take a look at how vRA enables the solving of typical tasks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Automation of the virtual machine provisioning process<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Ordering a virtual machine from the vRA portal.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Approval from the person responsible for infrastructure and\/or management.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Selecting the right cluster\/host in the network.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Requesting an IP address in IPAM (i.e. Infoblox) and obtaining network configuration.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Creating an account in Active Directory\/DNS record.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Deploying a machine.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Sending an email notification to the customer upon its readiness.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>A single blueprint for Linux-based VMs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>One object in the directory with the option to select the data center, role, and environment (dev, test, prod).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Based on the set of options above, the correct vCenter, networks, and storage are selected.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>IP addresses are reserved and DNS is registered. If the VM is deployed in a prod environment, it is added to the backup job.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Deploying a machine.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Integration with various Configuration Management systems (e.g., Ansible -&gt; executing the correct playbook).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Internal administration portal in a single directory through various third-party product APIs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Creating\/deleting and managing user accounts in AD according to the company's naming rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>In the case of creating a user account, login details are sent to the department\/section head. Based on the selected department and position, the user is assigned the necessary rights (RBAC).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Login details for the service account are sent directly to the user requesting its creation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Managing backup services.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Managing SDN firewall rules, security groups, IPSec tunnels, etc., is applied upon confirmation from responsible parties for the service.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>vRA is a purely business-oriented product, flexible and easily scalable. It is constantly evolving, has relatively strong support, and reflects modern trends. For example, it is one of the first products to transition to a microservices architecture based on containers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With it, nearly any automation scenarios within hybrid clouds can be implemented. Essentially, everything that has an API is supported in one form or another. Additionally, it is an excellent tool for providing services to end users alongside their delivery and the development of DevOps, which relies on the IT department for security and platform management.<\/p>\n<p>Another advantage of vRealize Automation is that it is a solution from VMware. It will suit most customers since they are already using the company's products. No need for any major restructuring.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we do not claim to provide a detailed description of the solution.
