Therefore, there will be many links, figures, and graphs.

What do we have? And most importantly — why?

First of all, a huge number of un-audited or, worse, retroactively audited (to it) projects. Secondly, an inexplicable number of scams of the most primitive level (more on this below). Thirdly, the underutilization of 1-10% of projects' potential due to plain greed, which focuses all attention on two or three schemes of 'quick and easy' money.<noindex>an example</noindex> No.00 or on-<noindex>an example</noindex> No.01 and <noindex>additional</noindex>No.02). It is the successful ICO projects that laid the technical foundation for today's DeFi hype: Ethereum first and foremost, followed by Tron, Bancor, Kyber Network, Brave (via BAT), and others. Secondly, cryptocurrencies and blockchain are indeed in demand in the world: Russia is more of an exception, as are Bangladesh or Turkmenistan, for example. Again, there are plenty of analytical reports on this. Third: what is happening now exists for 99.9% — it does not exist, even though the number of users is growing: in Venezuela, India, Chile, Argentina, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, even in the taboos.

Let me immediately present three disclaimers, so as not to discuss what has become (at least personally for me) tedious: in ICO scams, that gathered any amount and ultimately failed, are less in percentage terms than in the VC segment or banking loans (on- and ultimately failed, are less in percentage terms than in the VC segment or bank lending (on-<noindex>an example</noindex> , than fiat. The situation is different now and <noindex>Habr</noindex>the hedging function of BTC <noindex>is not in the fact that since the beginning of the crisis in 2018 the coin has risen from the range of $3200-$3500 to about $12,800 (by 2020, right before the open stage), but in the fact that 1 BTC == 1 BTC, meaning it is specifically</noindex> digital gold <noindex>, no matter how you understand that, the main thing is to preserve not so much the price, but the value itself.</noindex>, to be clear about what you mean by that, the main thing — preserving not just the price, but — the value.

wrapped in different forms <noindex>wrapped in different shapes</noindex> Tokenization is increasing its influence every day: therein lies the main advantage of the function I call Middle-of-Exchange. Are you coming to the exchange and want to buy something? Then you need btc, eth, or, for the boldest, usdt: the latter tool gained momentum in 2020 and surpassed btc precisely in connection with the DeFi hype.

The same goes for the unprecedentedly large payments (let's remember the FATF and the madness of 115-FZ in Russia, which has been extensively discussed on Habr) with low fees: many discuss the high GAS fees in Ethereum but forget that the fee for security against <noindex>DDoS</noindex> Despite everything, nothing cancels the bandwidth in general. And all of this — low fees, no excessive control measures, and the existence of deflationary models in a number of assets (btc is number 1 here, despite its cost losses compared to the same) <noindex>YFI</noindex>) attract more and more users.

And so on…

In the sense that too many small details have accumulated: starting from <noindex>negative rates</noindex> Regarding deposits, ending with statements about the taxation of everything and anything, including the same bank deposits. But the main point is still not in this: since 2008, or rather — since 2010, when the lawsuits related to the '08 crisis began, it became clear to everyone that offshore accounts in their current form are no longer necessary, more precisely — they no longer serve their functions. The example of Cyprus (both in terms of the 2012-2013 crisis and the position regarding the 'golden passports') is far from the only one, and Belize, the Bahamas, the Isle of Man, and many others are forced to make concessions to FATF. Actually, for this reason, they, along with Estonia, Switzerland, and other jurisdictions earning from attracting foreign money, quickly realized: cryptocurrencies are the offshore of the 21st century! But saying it is easier than doing it: the ICO hype was in the middle of 2017 — early 2018, a full cycle from 2013-2018. Then there was a timid attempt at IEO, but the laws for all this came out much later: regardless of whether it's about France, Thailand, or Liechtenstein (I'll refrain from mentioning the USA, China, and Russia). The absurdity of the situation is most evident in the fact that in the USA, they started talking about crypto assets as early as 2012 (and after the world congress — everywhere and anywhere in 2014: what remained) <noindex>is), but by 2020</noindex>the commissioners <noindex>commissioners</noindex> The SEC, senators, and other administrative dignitaries assert that clearer market regulation rules are needed. And yes: the ETF has not been launched either, I would remind you. Therefore, legislators from India, South Africa, Australia, and other jurisdictions increasingly remind one of a law blonde who clearly arrives at every party in the wrong outfit.

Or let me put it another way: DeFi is about flexibility, mobility, and speed as such. But in addition, there are also a number of negative qualities.

So what are the downsides?

Firstly, back in 2016-2018, fraudsters realized that similar tickers are a path to 'success', which is not much different from the banal combination of 'best' practices of spam and phishing. Therefore, a popular exchange <noindex>Uniswap was flooded with tons</noindex> of fake tokens and outright theft coins. Other examples include: YFFI and YFII, which only thrived on their similarity with YFI. Moreover, all of this destroys airdrops at the root: the tool — <noindex>wonderful,</noindex>but it struggles under such usage.

Secondly, for the most part, the experience of <noindex>The DAO</noindex> (by the way, this was indeed a DeFi product) taught no one and nothing (immediately — <noindex>proof): projects</noindex>know about the holes, <noindex>but do not even try to patch them (does this ring a bell?). Furthermore: the users (liquidity providers and other participants) are also aware of the holes and still apply them, pouring in more and more of their own funds (the figures are below).</noindex>, but they don't even try to fix them (sounds familiar?). Moreover, users (liquidity providers and other participants) also know about the holes and yet — they apply them, pouring more and more of their own funds in (see numbers below).

Thirdly, technical issues — the first layer of real problems. Much deeper difficulties lie in the economic models, both for the PoS families in general and for the DeFi segment in particular. Various experts have pointed this out — even <noindex>but so far, there has been zero progress: all the developments of V. Buterin and many other teams (I’m referring to models like</noindex>DAICO, <noindex>CSO</noindex>, <noindex>from Fairmint, and others) from 2016-2020 are simply ignored, and there are no decentralized escrows; no integrations with payment channels (to lower those same fees), and all that I will remind you about.</noindex> Fourth: instead of working on mistakes—unfair competitive struggle arises, where shortcomings become

Fourth: instead of addressing the issues — dishonest competitive struggle arises, where shortcomings become <noindex>rather than reasons for improving the entire ecosystem. The second consequence follows from this—</noindex>, rather than a reason to improve the entire ecosystem. The second consequence follows from here — <noindex>a banal increase</noindex> debts and other absurdities (especially — the race for collateral priority), which the DeFi market was supposedly originally intended to solve. Primarily, it concerns liquidations <noindex>during market downturns</noindex>, but not only that (again — see below). Rarely does anyone manage to leave quietly and somewhat honestly: the example of Paradigm Labs — is not unique, but also not widespread.

Fifth: what is most disappointing is that stagnation is perceived as normal. For instance, what were ICO contributors doing? They were buying in closed rounds (presale and similar) at discounts of 10-25-50-75 percent and selling immediately after the listing on exchanges. What we see with <noindex>COMP</noindex>? Хотя инструменты для анализа/противостояния имеются: <noindex>an example</noindex> #1 and <noindex>an example</noindex> #2. I would like to note separately that liquidity is also positioned as mutual assistance over the last 1.5 years: and for this reason, aggregators <noindex>of liquidity</noindex>, ranging from the little-known b2bx to the behemoths from 0x and others — a direct result of such synergy, however it may sound to you.

At the same time, more and more developers (VIZ, MakerDAO, Ethereum Classic, YML, and others) strive to hand everything over to the community as quickly as possible so that <noindex>levels of decentralization</noindex> were at the right indicator, rather than focusing on what is, in itself — an oxymoron, <noindex>in the hands of market leaders.</noindex> This does not always succeed immediately: for example, <noindex>500 accounts</noindex> — not the figure one would want to strive for on a global scale, but the direction is indeed correct.

It needs to be understood that after BNB (then you can take Token Terminal, Bankless, UNI) the native tokens of platforms have essentially become — a tool for collective distribution (and later — governance/voting tokens), that is, distributed legal entities, which were discussed back in 2017 — now a fact, albeit in a rather primitive form.

Perhaps the most surprising (for an external observer) the case is — precisely SushiSwap: first, the anonymous (!) owner pumps the asset from ... to ..., then — gets offended by everyone and <noindex>withdraws</noindex> funds, while refusing direct <noindex>management</noindex> at the same time refuses, then — receives a collective lawsuit (apparently, against the village of grandfather, considering the creator's anonymity), and then... <noindex>brings back</noindex> the funds! Moreover, he even receives praise from 75-90% of participants, despite the clear slowdown in project development. The most surprising thing is that everyone was <noindex>warned</noindex> about the possibility of such an attack, yet it didn’t concern anyone: do they still <noindex>hope</noindex> for a fair, impartial court?

Therefore, I am not a supporter of justifications, but the sphere is at least saturated with absurdity, simulacra, and other tools for the mind. However, I will also suggest tools for dissection:

Monitoring and analysis tools

In short, because the list can go on for a very long time. I took those who definitely don’t need advertising:

<noindex>defipulse.com</noindex> — the overall state of the market, dynamics, and so on.

<noindex>https://defirate.com/lend/</noindex> — nothing extra: dry numbers (which should not be trusted without additional checks).

<noindex>https://messari.io/screener/defi-coins-7EE8EDB1</noindex> — alternative monitoring (however, there are plenty of such services by various parameters — https://loanscan.io).

<noindex>https://btconethereum.com</noindex> — how many btc in... ether?

<noindex>https://etherscan.io/yieldfarms</noindex> — if you haven't heard about <noindex>farming</noindex>, then the time has definitely come: be extremely vigilant! (Alternative: <noindex>https://coinmarketcap.com/yield-farming/</noindex>).

<noindex>https://www.usefultulips.org/CombinedWorldPage.html</noindex> — not exactly about DeFi, but a resource that allows me to view the market more broadly (if you like it too, I recommend checking out <noindex>here</noindex>: one of the most important indicators for DEX).

I won't include chats, video reviews, and the like: here, Google. Trends suggest that everything is fine. The main rule — never trust absolute figures: after centralized exchanges in the crypto space inflated from 90 to even 99 percent — it’s better to study everything in dynamics and relative indicators.

The best confirmation of what has been said is the following chart:

Why is this example so important? First, because finding exact figures, especially those that match across different resources, is extremely difficult. Second, blocked funds are just one indicator, and even that can only be verified 100% through a full audit of services, which, as mentioned earlier, is not conducted in many cases. Third, even assuming unreasonable reserves of $15,000,000,000 — we still get an initial stage of development that looks overwhelming only because from 2017 to 2019, everyone was occupied with anything but DEX exchanges, liquidity, and tokenization of crypto assets as such.

Therefore — another chart, but this time with averaged figures from different sources:

But what disheartens me the most (again, personally) is that 99.9% of projects are just repeats of different schemes from the fiat world: loans and credits (though formally in this sector, they are the same) make up <noindex>up to 72%</noindex>. It's especially alarming that individuals entering the derivatives market can barely spell the word correctly in half of the cases. Still, I will try to generalize, stripping away the subjective component.

Market predictions, or thoughts out loud

“You cannot grasp the immensity,” — Kozma Prutkov always insisted, so here are a few theses that can be attempted to apply to practical aspects, especially since the trends from 2017-2019 were clear and are now only unfolding for those who do not monitor the market closely:

Derivatives are bad, but they are always — <noindex>a driver</noindex> visible growth: I am against repeating bad stories under a different sauce. Synthetix (or Opyn, Aco, DYMMAX, Hegic, Opium, Pods) could easily be a remake of Bull & Bear Binance, and futures have already proven detrimental to a market where newcomers are always plentiful. Hence — such a pull towards <noindex>speculation</noindex>: and that’s why stablecoins are an illusion, not reality, while their influence <noindex>significant</noindex>, but in a psychological sense, rather than strictly financial (economic). All this combined (the focus on liquidity rather than product projections (token); love for visible calm (stablecoins); attacks due to poorly thought-out models (vampire mining and the like)) creates an inverse pyramid effect: for instance, the market capitalization of tokens <noindex>ERC-20</noindex> can easily exceed the same indicator of the progenitor, but without it they are absolutely meaningless; and this is relevant also because everything compounds with trading with <noindex>50x leverage</noindex> and even more.

In this sense, the volatile mix of 'CeFi + DeFi' (<noindex>comparisons</noindex>), especially in the era of <noindex>CBDC</noindex>. (for example BSC, again, — indicative), which should be multiplied by the diverse attacks on (D/L)PoS-family creating a whole chain of negative dependencies. The same vampiric <noindex>drainage</noindex> liquidity by itself — is a bug, but when system management problems arise (let's recall again about <noindex>Sushi</noindex>: if you still don’t understand why, then <noindex>study</noindex>), and then everything multiplies through exchange rate bindings (consider Ampleforth, Soft Yearn (SYFI), Bull/Bear Binance), it turns into not just confusion, but deliberate manipulations, one of which is that STO will never become ICO, while <noindex>leaders of pseudo-crypto projects do everything</noindex>, to always seem neglected, while earning quite well themselves (another example: the confrontation between Steem (Hive), Steemit & Tron communities or BTC-e in full view long before the described events).

Be that as it may, DeFi in the sense that is close to me, that is, as a complete set of decentralized financial tools, from the simplest btc to complex reputation collateral schemes, must evolve. Therefore, it is important that <noindex>total public control</noindex> has become the norm. Only in this case, the combination of DEX + DAO through various Dapps (ranging from Web 3.0 browsers and wallets to closed ecosystems) will create truly interesting, innovative, and most importantly — promising models. For now, I only observe playing with greed, as well as a departure from the main criterion of freedom — <noindex>from personal responsibility</noindex>.

Knowing the ICO experience quite well, I'll also note this: «approximately 49% of the leading startups in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector are located in the USA. Such data was published by analysts <noindex>The Block</noindex>. Of the 73 firms tracked by experts, 12% are based in the UK, another 10% — in Singapore». So, decentralized finance is still only decentralized in words: in reality — they are still ordinary companies/firms, although DAO is a great tool for automation and certainly more suitable for distributing dividends than JSC or some LLC. But <noindex>The USA will remind about itself</noindex>, and then — regulators in other jurisdictions: why the “market participants” forgot about this, I don’t know.

But why does this happen?

It's simple: «DeFi ecosystem projects operate <noindex>in 12 key areas</noindex>: prediction markets; decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs); <noindex>lending</noindex>; asset management; derivatives; insurance; exchanges and liquidity providers; stablecoins; banking and payments; infrastructure; marketplaces; tokenization of bitcoins». Not a word about tokenization as such, nor anything that you could encounter in the world of traditional finance. Nothing. And here are the TOP categories:

Hence the absurdity: while using the adjusted total value locked (Adjusted TVL) or non-fungible tokens (NFT) may seem attractive (see the experience of WAX or Dapper Labs through Dr. Seuss), this does not fundamentally change the main issue — the paradigm of thinking. Speculations do not offer anything to the market, I repeat for the fourth time in four years.

In conclusion

My impression of DeFi in its current form is as follows: I arrived at a concert to listen to my favorite music, but they played something entirely different: instead of Rachmaninoff's technique and the orchestra's harmonious performance — it was clumsy jazz from local musicians, which they somehow consider innovative, even though similar music was already being produced in the 1940s, in a smoky room with terrible scraps that are oddly referred to as food, and you have to pay a fortune for everything! Perhaps a different venue or musicians is needed, or is it just a lack of mood? Perhaps this is why I tried to be objective and present not only what is clearly negative but also what might be worth exploring.

In any case, what was said <noindex>4 years ago — still relevant</noindex>: if for you, like me, p2p is about fairness (distribution), equality (initial conditions), and collaboration (through evolution), the existing DeFi model clearly contradicts both what is stated in Bitcoin's genesis block and what Assange wrote about, along with those who have contributed enough to the development of cryptocurrencies and blockchain to be heard. However, everyone is free to think that DeFi is — <noindex>the new email</noindex>, and thus is already breaking stereotypes, the system, etc.: after all, in the end, what reason do I have to be dissatisfied? The DEX segment, as expected, <noindex>is developing and surpassing</noindex> centralized counterparts; the number of cryptocurrency users and DeFi resources is growing (though for now it’s only in the tens of thousands in the latter case, which is already the size of a small town); <noindex>Ethereum</noindex> accelerating towards version 2.0 and so on, and so forth. But it’s like the joke with the spoons, where they were found, but the residue remains: can we not discuss this topic at all? Yes, but then the network will be filled with nothing but praises and then an endless stream of complaints afterward: forewarned is forearmed, even if intellectually. This is precisely — goal: to move from hype to numbers, facts, and forecasts based on them, not just rambling about Bitcoin at $100,000 or the futility of it all (a line for those reading from the end).

What’s next?

The very <noindex>work</noindex>, which is worth reading if you want to understand a little more: I think the English language is no longer a problem, at least deepl will definitely do its job.

As always, Twitter for the crypto industry is a treasure trove of knowledge: here is <noindex>an example</noindex>, but there are significantly more sources above, and a simple hashtag search will yield more than complex analytics in Russian search engines.

But it's better to <noindex>start with Satoshi's letters</noindex>: for some reason, many overlooked them, but there is plenty of important and interesting information.

And for now — goodbye!

P.S.

I didn't mention the risk of oracles, sophisticated attacks, and many other topics, including non-trivial approaches to open data analytics.
