The first major update of the Linux Mint 20 distribution (codenamed 'Ulyssa') has been released. Linux Mint is based on the Ubuntu package base but has a number of differences, including its default software distribution policy. Linux Mint positions itself as a ready-to-use solution for end users, which is why many common applications and dependencies are included in the standard offering.<\/p>\n
Key features of the 20.1 update:<\/p>\n

The ability to create a web application from websites has been added. This is done using the Web-app manager. In operation, the web application behaves like a regular desktop application \u2014 it has its own window, icon, and other features typical of desktop graphical applications.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

The standard offering includes the IPTV viewer application Hypnotix, which can also display VOD content, as well as play movies and series. By default, Free-IPTV (a third-party provider) is offered as the IPTV provider.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

The interface and capabilities of the Cinnamon desktop environment and standard applications have been improved, including the file manager, which now allows marking files as favorites and accessing them directly through favorites (icon on the taskbar in the tray, favorites section in the menu, and favorites section in the file manager). Support for working with favorite files has also been added to the Xed, Xreader, Xviewer, Pix, and Warpinator applications.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

Overall performance improvements to Cinnamon, including 5% better rendering at 4K resolution.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

Due to issues with printers and scanners, the utility ippusbxd has been removed from the standard offering, which provided connectivity to devices via the 'IPP over USB' protocol. The method of working with printers and scanners has been reverted to the state it was in Linux Mint 19.3 and earlier, i.e., working directly through drivers that connect automatically or manually. Manual connection of devices via the IPP protocol has been retained.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
