To accomplish this, the organizers collaborated with a team <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/element.io\">Element<\/a> and selected a chat based on an open protocol <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/matrix.org\">Matrix<\/a> to build a federated real-time communication network, a free VoIP platform <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/meet.jit.si\">Jitsi Meet<\/a> for integrating video conferencing, and their own tools for automation. The conference was attended by over 30,000 users, including 8,000 active participants and 24,000 guests.<\/p>\n<p><\/noindex><\/noindex> <noindex><\/p>\n<p>The Matrix protocol is built on a linear event history in JSON format within a directed acyclic graph (DAG): in simple terms, it is a distributed database that stores the complete history of sent messages and the data of participating users, replicating this information among participating servers \u2014 a closely analogous technology to how Git operates. The main implementation of this network is a messenger that supports end-to-end encryption and VoIP (audio and video calls, group conferences). The reference implementations of clients and servers are developed by the commercial company Element, whose employees also lead a non-profit organization <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/matrix.org\/foundation\">Matrix.org Foundation<\/a>, overseeing the development of the Matrix protocol specification. Currently, there are 28 million accounts and 60 thousand servers in the Matrix network.<\/p>\n<p><\/noindex>  <noindex><\/p>\n<p>For the FOSDEM event, a dedicated server was allocated with the resources and support of the commercial service <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/ems.element.io\">Element Matrix Services (EMS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/noindex> <\/p>\n<p>The following infrastructure operated over the weekend:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a horizontally scalable Matrix server <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/matrix-org\/synapse\">Synapse<\/a> with many additional worker processes (a total of 11 different types of worker processes);<\/li>\n<li>a cluster for the Jitsi Meet VoIP platform, used for broadcasting rooms with talks, Q&amp;A sessions, and all other group video chats (around 100 video conferences were functioning simultaneously);<\/li>\n<li>a Jibri cluster \u2014 FOSDEM's development for relaying video from Jitsi Meet rooms to several different destinations (Jibri is a headless Chromium process running on AWS using the X11 framebuffer and ALSA audio system, with output recorded using ffmpeg);<\/li>\n<li>Matrix bot for automating the creation of Matrix rooms on the FOSDEM schedule, where presentations and other activities will take place;<\/li>\n<li>special widgets for the Element client, such as the FOSDEM schedule in the right sidebar and a list of important messages next to the video stream, filtered by the number of emoji reactions from users;<\/li>\n<li>bridges in each of the 666 rooms with presentations, allowing users from IRC and XMPP to send messages and read their history (watching the video stream was also available via a direct link without using Matrix and Element).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Users could register on the FOSDEM server using either a username and password combination or through the Social Login mechanism, enabling login using Google, Facebook, GitHub accounts, and others. This innovation first appeared at FOSDEM and will soon be available to all other Matrix users in the upcoming updates of Synapse and Element. Statistics show that half of the users registered using Social Login.<\/p>\n<p>FOSDEM 2021 on Matrix is arguably the largest free online conference to date. It was not without issues (initially due to improper configuration of the Matrix server, which caused enormous load), but overall, attendees were satisfied and gave positive feedback about the event. And although no one saw each other in person, one of the key bonding elements of the FOSDEM community \u2014 namely, friendly gatherings over a beer \u2014 did not go unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p>Matrix developers hope this example will encourage people to consider using a fully free tech stack for their communications and VoIP \u2014 even on a large scale, like an entire FOSDEM conference.<\/p>\n<p>
