Following GitHub and Bitbucket, the development platform GitLab has announced it will stop using the term \"master\" by default for main branches in favor of \"main.\" The term \"master\" has recently been considered politically incorrect, recalling slavery and being perceived as offensive by some members of the community. <\/p>\n

This change will be implemented both on GitLab.com and in the self-hosted version of GitLab after the update. The new name will be applied when creating new projects. In GitLab version 13.11, scheduled for April 22, there will be an optional flag for replacing the primary branch name, but, by default, new projects will continue to use the name master. In GitLab version 14.0, expected on May 22, the name main will be used by default for all newly created projects. <\/p>\n

When updating existing systems to GitLab 14.0, new projects created through the web interface will also use the name main by default. If continuous integration systems are in use, changes may be required in scripts and settings that hard-code references to master. Users will have the option to revert to using the name master through a setting that controls the default branch name.
