As part of the ongoing Proton project, developers at Mozilla plan to remove the compact display mode of the interface panels (the 'hamburger' menu in the panel -> Customize -> Density -> Compact) from the settings, leaving only the normal mode and the mode for touch screens. The compact mode uses smaller buttons and eliminates excess whitespace around the panel elements and tab area to free up additional vertical space for content. <\/p>\n

The reason mentioned for this decision is the desire to simplify the interface and offer a layout that suits the majority of users. It is noted that the compact mode switch is quite difficult to find in the settings and, in the developers' opinion, very few people use this mode (in analyzing telemetry, developers overlook that those who change the default settings tend to disable telemetry sharing more actively and fall out of the statistics). <\/p>\n

According to Mozilla, 93.3% of users employ screens with a vertical resolution of 768 pixels and above, which is why it has been decided to use 768 pixels as the minimum height for optimization \u2014 the tab and address bar will be allocated 92 pixels (in the new design, the bar will be thinner than it is currently in normal mode). With the classic menu disabled, 88% of the vertical space will be dedicated to the content, not counting the operating system panels and without considering that some users do not maximize the window. Taking into account the trend of modern websites to fix the header and display a warning dialog about cookie usage that can only be accepted and not declined, navigation on laptops with small widescreen displays resembles a view from a loophole.
