Hector Martin proposed to include the first set of patches prepared by the Asahi Linux project in the Linux kernel, which is working on adapting Linux for Mac computers equipped with Apple's M1 ARM chip. These patches have already been approved by the maintainer of the Linux SoC branch and accepted into the Linux-next codebase, which forms the basis for the functionality of kernel 5.13. Technically, Linus Torvalds can block the proposed changes, but such an outcome is considered unlikely. <\/p>\n
The patches include support for M1 SoC components not related to the GPU, such as the interrupt controller, timer, UART, SMP, functions for organizing input\/output, and MMIO. Reverse engineering of the GPU is still ongoing; the patches provide support for framebuffer and console output through the serial port. Separately, an open hardware adapter is being developed, recognized for simplifying the connection to the console via the serial port and debugging. In its current form, due to Apple's use of non-standard USB-PD commands in its hardware, the simplest way to access the console is to connect to another computer based on the Apple M1 chip using a USB-C cable. A more complex method involves creating a bridge based on an Arduino microcontroller, the FUSB30 chip, and a UART-TTL adapter. <\/p>\n
The project has also prepared the m1n1 bootloader, which allows loading the Linux kernel and a minimal system environment on Mac computers with Apple M1 CPU. Apple allows booting unsigned kernels on computers with M1 CPU without the need for jailbreak. This feature enables developers to experiment with new XNU kernels, but attempting to boot other systems presents challenges, as Apple uses its own boot protocol and a different Device Tree format. The m1n1 bootloader proposed by the Asahi Linux project acts as a layer, enabling the use of the standard Device Tree and the native boot protocol used in the Linux kernel for ARM64.
