After a year of development, a new stable branch of the high-performance HTTP server and multiprotocol proxy server nginx 1.20.0 has been released, incorporating changes accumulated in the main branch 1.19.x. Going forward, all changes in the stable branch 1.20 will focus on fixing serious bugs and vulnerabilities. Soon, the main branch nginx 1.21 will be formed, where the development of new features will continue. For regular users who do not need to ensure compatibility with third-party modules, it is recommended to use the main branch, based on which commercial product releases of Nginx Plus are generated every three months. <\/p>\n
According to Netcraft's March report, nginx is used on 20.15% of all active websites (compared to 19.56% last year and 20.73% two years ago), ranking second in popularity in this category (Apache holds a share of 25.38% (down from 27.64% last year), Google \u2013 10.09%, Cloudflare \u2013 8.51%). However, when considering all websites, nginx maintains its lead with a market share of 35.34% (down from 36.91% last year and 27.52% two years ago), while Apache's share stands at 25.98%, OpenResty (a platform based on nginx and LuaJIT) at 6.55%, and Microsoft IIS at 5.96%. <\/p>\n
Among the million most visited websites in the world, nginx accounts for 25.55% (up from 25.54% last year and down from 26.22% two years ago). Currently, around 419 million websites are powered by nginx (down from 459 million last year). According to W3Techs, nginx is used on 33.7% of the million most visited sites, compared to 31.9% in April last year and 41.8% the year before (the decline is attributed to separate accounting for Cloudflare's HTTP server). Apache's share decreased from 39.5% to 34%, while Microsoft IIS declined from 8.3% to 7%. LiteSpeed's share rose from 6.3% to 8.4%, and Node.js from 0.8% to 1.2%. In Russia, nginx is used on 79.1% of the most visited websites (up from 78.9% last year). <\/p>\n

The ability to verify client certificates using external services based on the OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) has been added.
