Est\u00e1 disponible para pruebas el candidato a lanzamientos de la distribuci\u00f3n Rocky Linux 8.3, destinada a crear una nueva versi\u00f3n libre de RHEL que pueda ocupar el lugar del cl\u00e1sico CentOS, despu\u00e9s de que la empresa Red Hat decidiera cesar el soporte para la rama CentOS 8 a finales de 2021, en lugar de 2029 como se hab\u00eda previsto inicialmente. Las versiones de Rocky Linux est\u00e1n preparadas para las arquitecturas x86_64 y aarch64. <\/p>\n

La distribuci\u00f3n es completamente compatible a nivel binario con Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.3. Al igual que en el cl\u00e1sico CentOS, los cambios realizados en los paquetes consisten en eliminar la vinculaci\u00f3n con la marca Red Hat. El proyecto se desarrolla bajo la direcci\u00f3n de Gregory Kurtzer, fundador de CentOS. Paralelamente, se ha creado una empresa comercial, Ctrl IQ, para el desarrollo de productos avanzados basados en Rocky Linux y el apoyo a la comunidad de desarrolladores de esta distribuci\u00f3n, que ha recibido una inversi\u00f3n de 4 millones de d\u00f3lares. La propia distribuci\u00f3n de Rocky Linux promete desarrollarse de forma independiente de Ctrl IQ bajo la gesti\u00f3n de la comunidad. Tambi\u00e9n se unieron al desarrollo y financiamiento del proyecto las empresas MontaVista, 45Drives, OpenDrives y Amazon Web Services. <\/p>\n

Como alternativa al antiguo CentOS, adem\u00e1s de Rocky Linux, se est\u00e1 desarrollando el proyecto AlmaLinux con el apoyo de CloudLinux, cuyo primer lanzamiento estable ya tuvo lugar a finales de marzo. Oracle Linux tambi\u00e9n se est\u00e1 promoviendo como reemplazo de CentOS. Adem\u00e1s, Red Hat ha ofrecido la posibilidad de usar RHEL de forma gratuita en organizaciones que desarrollan software de c\u00f3digo abierto y en entornos de desarrolladores individuales que cuentan con hasta 16 sistemas virtuales o f\u00edsicos.
