Se ha lanzado la distribuci\u00f3n Rocky Linux 8.4, dise\u00f1ada para crear una nueva compilaci\u00f3n gratuita de RHEL, capaz de ocupar el lugar del cl\u00e1sico CentOS, tras la decisi\u00f3n de Red Hat de terminar el soporte para la rama CentOS 8 a finales de 2021, en lugar de 2029 como se hab\u00eda planeado originalmente. Esta es la primera versi\u00f3n estable del proyecto, considerada lista para implementaciones en producci\u00f3n. Las compilaciones de Rocky Linux est\u00e1n preparadas para las arquitecturas x86_64 y aarch64. <\/p>\n

La distribuci\u00f3n es completamente compatible de manera binaria con Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4. Al igual que en el cl\u00e1sico CentOS, los cambios realizados en los paquetes se limitan a eliminar la asociaci\u00f3n con la marca Red Hat. El proyecto se desarrolla bajo la direcci\u00f3n de Gregory Kurtzer, fundador de CentOS. Al mismo tiempo, se ha creado una empresa comercial, Ctrl IQ, para el desarrollo de productos avanzados basados en Rocky Linux y el apoyo a la comunidad de desarrolladores de esta distribuci\u00f3n, que ha recibido 4 millones de d\u00f3lares en inversiones. Se promete desarrollar la propia distribuci\u00f3n Rocky Linux de manera independiente de Ctrl IQ bajo la gesti\u00f3n de la comunidad. Adem\u00e1s, Red Hat ha permitido el uso gratuito de RHEL en organizaciones que desarrollan software de c\u00f3digo abierto y en entornos de desarrolladores individuales con hasta 16 sistemas virtuales o f\u00edsicos.
