El 14 de julio de 1992 se public\u00f3 la primera versi\u00f3n funcional (0.1) del sistema operativo 386BSD, que ofreci\u00f3 una implementaci\u00f3n de BSD UNIX para procesadores i386, basada en los desarrollos de 4.3BSD Net\/2. El sistema ven\u00eda con un instalador simplificado, inclu\u00eda una pila de red completa, un n\u00facleo modular y un sistema de gesti\u00f3n de acceso basado en roles. En marzo de 1993, debido al deseo de hacer que la aceptaci\u00f3n de parches fuera m\u00e1s abierta y de consolidar el soporte para diversas arquitecturas, se form\u00f3 un fork de NetBSD a partir de 386BSD 0.1, y en junio de 1993, sobre la base de 4.3BSD-Lite \u2018Net\/2\u2019 y 386BSD 0.1, se fund\u00f3 el proyecto FreeBSD, que incorpor\u00f3 parches no aceptados en 386BSD.
