Los desarrolladores del proyecto Xubuntu publicaron un informe sobre el hackeo ocurrido hace un mes en el sitio Xubuntu.org, como resultado del cual se coloc\u00f3 un enlace en la p\u00e1gina de descarga de la distribuci\u00f3n que redirig\u00eda a un archivo llamado «Xubuntu-Safe-Download.zip» con c\u00f3digo malicioso. Dentro del archivo, disfrazado como instalador de Xubuntu, se distribuy\u00f3 un ejecutable para la plataforma Windows, que al ser utilizado introduc\u00eda malware en el sistema, analizando datos en el portapapeles y sustituyendo direcciones de criptocarteras. <\/p>\n

El an\u00e1lisis del incidente mostr\u00f3 que el acceso al sitio se consigui\u00f3 mediante un ataque a un componente vulnerable de la plataforma WordPress, cuya gesti\u00f3n estaba a cargo de la empresa Canonical. Tras obtener acceso, los atacantes pudieron inyectar su c\u00f3digo en la plataforma, modificando los enlaces en la p\u00e1gina de descarga y colocando el archivo «https:\/\/xubuntu.org\/wp-content\/Xubuntu-Safe-Download.zip». <\/p>\n

Los primeros informes sobre la posible compromiso datan del 15 de octubre. Se se\u00f1ala que los equipos de Canonical responsables del mantenimiento de la infraestructura fueron notificados poco despu\u00e9s de recibir quejas, tras lo cual comenzaron una investigaci\u00f3n de inmediato y desactivaron la p\u00e1gina de descarga (nota: a pesar de la declaraci\u00f3n de que el trabajo en el an\u00e1lisis del incidente comenz\u00f3 casi de inmediato, el archivo malicioso permaneci\u00f3 en la p\u00e1gina de descarga hasta la tarde del 19 de octubre). <\/p>\n

El 11 de noviembre, la empresa Canonical proporcion\u00f3 a los desarrolladores de Xubuntu un informe confirmando la eliminaci\u00f3n de la vulnerabilidad, la implementaci\u00f3n de cambios para fortalecer la seguridad y la reactivaci\u00f3n de la p\u00e1gina de descarga en modo solo lectura. Para prevenir incidentes similares en el futuro, se decidi\u00f3 cambiar el sistema de gesti\u00f3n de contenido WordPress<\/a> por el generador de sitios est\u00e1ticos Hugo, que solo permite la publicaci\u00f3n de contenido est\u00e1tico en el sitio. <\/p>\n

Se afirma que el ataque se limit\u00f3 \u00fanicamente a la sustituci\u00f3n del enlace en el sitio web Xubuntu.org y no afect\u00f3 otros elementos de la infraestructura. En particular, el ataque no afect\u00f3 al sistema de construcci\u00f3n, el servicio cdimages.ubuntu.com, los espejos, los repositorios de paquetes y otros elementos del desarrollo de Xubuntu.
