El proyecto es una evoluci\u00f3n de una soluci\u00f3n previamente presentada por la empresa hace aproximadamente un a\u00f1o como alternativa a las plataformas de contenedores cl\u00e1sicas como Docker. B\u00e1sicamente, se trata de una herramienta CLI que permite crear, ejecutar y publicar contenedores compatibles con OCI, con integraci\u00f3n en macOS y un m\u00e9todo propio para su ejecuci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Dado que macOS no soporta contenedores de Linux directamente, Apple utiliz\u00f3 un enfoque basado en m\u00e1quinas virtuales ligeras. Cada contenedor se ejecuta dentro de un entorno Linux aislado, obteniendo de hecho su propio micro-sistema. Esto se asemeja al WSL de Microsoft.<\/p>\n

A diferencia de los contenedores cl\u00e1sicos, que generalmente est\u00e1n dise\u00f1ados para un solo proceso, aqu\u00ed hablamos de un entorno m\u00e1s completo. Este espacio Linux puede funcionar durante mucho tiempo, ejecutar servicios en segundo plano y mantener el estado entre sesiones, casi como un sistema completo dentro de macOS.<\/p>\n

Una de las caracter\u00edsticas clave es la integraci\u00f3n m\u00e1xima con el sistema. La carpeta de inicio de macOS es autom\u00e1ticamente accesible dentro del entorno de Linux. Por lo tanto, se pueden usar simult\u00e1neamente el c\u00f3digo, los repositorios y la configuraci\u00f3n en ambos entornos.<\/p>\n

Todo esto permite escribir c\u00f3digo en el editor habitual en macOS y, al mismo tiempo, compilarlo y ejecutarlo en Linux sin cambios innecesarios.<\/p>\n

Tambi\u00e9n se soportan diferentes distribuciones, desde Ubuntu y Debian hasta Alpine, de modo que cada entorno se puede configurar de manera independiente.<\/p>\n

Apple agreg\u00f3 la gesti\u00f3n de \"m\u00e1quinas\" de contenedores: se pueden crear, ejecutar, detener, configurar recursos y elegir el comportamiento del sistema de archivos. La \u00fanica limitaci\u00f3n para obtener tal funcionalidad es que para escenarios avanzados con virtualizaci\u00f3n anidada se requiere un Mac con procesador M3 o m\u00e1s reciente, as\u00ed como macOS 15 y un n\u00facleo especial que lo soporte.
