Los representantes de la Organizaci\u00f3n Europea para la Investigaci\u00f3n Nuclear (CERN) mencionaron en su discurso en la conferencia MiniDebConf sus planes de migrar m\u00e1s de 2200 computadoras industriales y embebidas de RHEL a Debian 13 para finales de 2026. Estas computadoras son utilizadas para gestionar el complejo acelerador, que incluye el Gran Colisionador de Hadrones y una serie de instalaciones experimentales independientes. Se aclara que la migraci\u00f3n no afectar\u00e1 a los centros de datos ni a los sistemas experimentales, donde se seguir\u00e1 utilizando RHEL\/AlmaLinux. <\/p>\n

Inicialmente, los ingenieros de CERN planeaban cambiar a CentOS Stream, pero abandonaron esa idea debido a la compilaci\u00f3n de paquetes para la arquitectura x86-64-v2 («-march=x86-64-v2»), que cubre las extensiones SSE3, SSE4_2, SSSE3, POPCNT, LAHF-SAHF y CMPXCHG16B, lo que impide el uso de la distribuci\u00f3n en hardware antiguo. Entre los problemas que enfrentaron durante la implementaci\u00f3n de Debian, se destaca la falta de herramientas est\u00e1ndar adecuadas para la construcci\u00f3n autom\u00e1tica y la publicaci\u00f3n de paquetes, as\u00ed como la ausencia de una pol\u00edtica oficial sobre m\u00f3dulos binarios del kernel y problemas de soporte en algunas herramientas que manejan m\u00faltiples versiones de un mismo paquete en un repositorio.

En su momento, el CERN fue uno de los desarrolladores clave de la distribuci\u00f3n Scientific Linux, cuyo desarrollo fue detenido en 2019 en favor de CentOS. En 2022, tras un cambio en la pol\u00edtica de Red Hat respecto al soporte de CentOS y el cierre anticipado del soporte para la rama CentOS 8, el CERN migr\u00f3 a AlmaLinux como la distribuci\u00f3n est\u00e1ndar para el soporte de experimentos, aunque continu\u00f3 usando los sistemas ya desplegados basados en CentOS y RHEL hasta el final del ciclo de vida de las versiones en uso.
