El 4 de octubre de 1999, Daniel Robbins registr\u00f3 el dominio gentoo.org y comenz\u00f3 el desarrollo de una nueva distribuci\u00f3n, en la que, junto con Bob Mutch, intent\u00f3 trasladar algunas ideas del proyecto FreeBSD, combin\u00e1ndolas con una distribuci\u00f3n de Linux en desarrollo desde hac\u00eda aproximadamente un a\u00f1o llamada Enoch, en la que se llevaban a cabo experimentos para crear una distribuci\u00f3n compuesta por c\u00f3digo fuente con optimizaciones para hardware espec\u00edfico. Una caracter\u00edstica fundamental de Gentoo fue la separaci\u00f3n entre los puertos (portage) compilados a partir de c\u00f3digo fuente y el sistema base m\u00ednimo necesario para compilar las aplicaciones principales de la distribuci\u00f3n.
