The first test release of Asahi Linux, a distribution for Apple devices with the M1 chip

On the announced support for the proper operation in the distribution of Wi-Fi, USB2 (Thunderbolt ports), USB3 (Mac Mini Type A ports), display, NVMe drives, Ethernet, SD card reader, laptop lid switch, built-in display, keyboard, touchpad, keyboard backlight control, CPU frequency switching, and battery charge information. On M1 systems, the headphone jack also works, and on Mac Mini devices, HDMI output is available. Components whose support is in the final stage and will soon be available include USB3, built-in speakers, and display controller (backlight, V-Sync, power management).

Among the currently unsupported components are: GPU accelerated graphics processing, hardware acceleration of video codecs, DisplayPort, camera, touch bar, Thunderbolt, HDMI in MacBook, Bluetooth, machine learning accelerator, deep CPU power-saving modes. The distribution includes all standard packages from Arch Linux repositories, but some applications have specific unresolved issues mainly due to the kernel being built with a 16KB memory page size. For example, problems have been observed with Chromium, Emacs, lvm2, f2fs, and packages using the jemalloc library (for example, Rust) or the electron platform (vscode, spotify, etc.). Issues were noted with applications using the libunwind and webkitgtk libraries, but fixes have already been formulated for them.

The distribution can be used without fear of legal issues — Apple normally allows the loading of unsigned kernel binaries on its computers without the need for jailbreak. The project is completely legal as no code from macOS and Darwin is used in the port, and the specifics of hardware interaction are defined based on reverse engineering, which is permitted by law in many countries to ensure compatibility.
