AlmaLinux 8.6 distribution has been released, synchronized with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 and containing all the changes introduced in this release. Builds have been prepared for architectures x86_64, ARM64, and ppc64le in the form of bootable (830 MB), minimal (1.6 GB), and full images (11 GB). Live builds, as well as images for Raspberry Pi, containers, and cloud platforms, are promised to be created later.
The distribution is fully binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 and can be used as a drop-in replacement for CentOS 8. Changes consist of rebranding, removal of RHEL-specific packages such as redhat-*, insights-client, and subscription-manager-migration*, and the creation of a 'devel' repository with additional packages and build dependencies.
AlmaLinux distributsioon on loodud CloudLinuxi poolt vastuseks Red Hati enneaegsele CentOS 8 toe lõpetamisele (CentOS 8 uuenduste väljaandmine peatati 2021. aasta lõpus, mitte 2029. aastal nagu kasutajad eeldasid). Projekti juhib eraldi mittetulundusühing AlmaLinux OS Foundation, mis loodi arendamiseks neutraalses keskkonnas koos kogukonna osalusega ning kasutades haldamise mudelit, mis sarnaneb Fedora projekti töökorraldusele. Distributsioon on tasuta kõigile kasutajatele. Kõik AlmaLinuxi arendused avaldatakse avatud litsentside alusel.
Lisaks AlmaLinuxile pakuvad klassikalise CentOS 8 alternatiiviks ka Rocky Linux (arendab kogukond CentOS asutaja juhtimisel, toetab Ctrl IQ), VzLinux (ettevalmistatud Virtuozzo poolt), Oracle Linux, SUSE Liberty Linux ja EuroLinux. Lisaks andis Red Hat võimaluse tasuta kasutada RHEL-i organisatsioonides, mis arendavad avatud tarkvara, ja isiklike arendajate keskkondades, kus on kuni 16 virtuaalset või füüsilist süsteemi.
Additionally, it is worth noting that the startup Ctrl IQ, which supports the development of the Rocky Linux distribution, has received investments of $26 million. The Rocky Linux distribution aims to fill the role of classic CentOS and was created by Gregory Kurtzer, the founder of the CentOS project. In addition to participating in the development of Rocky Linux, Ctrl IQ is also developing a technology stack based on Rocky Linux for high-performance computing in enterprises.
