Roman Gushchin, Linux kernel developer at Google, announced the creation of a new code review system using large language models. Development has been underway for several months and is named Sashiko, after a traditional Japanese stitching technique made of small, straight stitches that form various patterns.

The project has been in use at Google for some time to identify issues, and is now available for everyone and set up for automatic review of all patches sent to the Linux kernel developers mailing list. Sashiko's code is written in Rust and is open under the Apache 2.0 license. The system is self-contained and can be used on personal hardware.

Sashiko was developed to work with the Google Gemini Pro 3.1 model but has been partially tested with Claude and is likely to work with other modern large language models. The prompts used for reviewing are based on a set of review-prompts prepared by Chris Mason, the creator of the Btrfs filesystem. The token budget and infrastructure for Sashiko are funded by Google. Project rights have been transferred to the Linux Foundation.

According to conducted tests, using the Gemini 3.1 Pro model, the Sashiko toolkit was able to detect 53% of errors from an unfiltered set including 1000 recent kernel issues marked with 'Fixes:'. At first glance, 53% may not seem impressive, but it should be noted that all identified issues were initially overlooked during human reviews.
