Linus Torvalds has released the sixth weekly test version of the upcoming Linux kernel 5.3. This release marks the 28th anniversary of the original first version of the new operating system at that time.
Torvalds paraphrased his original announcement on this topic. It reads as follows:
“I am creating a (free) operating system (this is more than just a hobby) for 486 AT clones and many other hardware solutions. This has been brewing for the past 28 years, and it is still not done. I would like to receive feedback on any bugs presented in this release (or older bugs, if any),” the developer wrote.
Most of the 5.3-rc6 patch consists of updates to drivers for network devices. However, there are other fixes as well. Torvalds noted that a RC8 release is not ruled out. As for the stable release, Linux 5.3 is expected in two to three weeks.
Recall that Torvalds released the first version 0.0.1 on August 25, 1991, after five months of development. The first public version of the kernel contained about 10,000 lines of source code and compressed to 62 KB. The modern Linux kernel has over 26 million lines of code.
It is noted that the approximate development of such a project from scratch would cost between 1 and 3 billion dollars.
