A.S. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts was created by visionary Ivan Tsvetaev, who sought to introduce bright images and ideas into the contemporary environment. Over a little more than a century since its opening, this environment has changed significantly, and today it's time for images in digital form. The Pushkin Museum is the center of an entire museum quarter in Moscow, one of the country's main venues, a place for preserving masterpieces from the past and ideas for the future. It can also boast the largest in the world , which is currently running on Microsoft Azure's cloud platform.
The project was developed with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation for architects, designers, and curators who are involved in planning new exhibition spaces at the A.S. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts: they received the opportunity to design exhibitions and observe the work process in the museum's digital twin, including with the help of virtual reality glasses. For this, an entire museum quarter was created in detail in 3D Max, including interior spaces, and for interactivity, they were placed in 3D Unity.
You can now see the halls of the main building, the Gallery of Art from European and American Countries of the 19th-20th centuries, the Department of Personal Collections, the Training and Art Museum named after Tsvetaev at the RGGU, and the Memorial Apartment of Svyatoslav Richter. Panoramas with audio guides are available on computers and tablets, while VR glasses are required for a 3D walk.
The virtualization of the Pushkin Museum is a great example of how modern technologies have expanded the opportunities for both specialists and regular museum visitors, even those who cannot personally reach the building on Volkhonka Street in Moscow. The implementation of the project has already been going on for more than 10 years and will not be completed anytime soon, just as good ideas never run out.
In the history of the project, several important dates can be highlighted:
- 2009: the creation of a virtual walk through the Italian courtyard - the first 3D scanning and digitization of the museum.
- 2016: the creation of a system for planning future exhibitions and objectively assessing the projected museum space.
- 2018: the virtual Pushkin Museum project received international awards - ja .
