Igor Sysoev, the creator of the high-performance HTTP server NGINX, has left F5 Network, where he was among the technical leaders of the NGINX project after the acquisition of NGINX Inc. His departure is attributed to a desire to spend more time with family and pursue personal projects. At F5, Igor held the position of chief architect. The management of NGINX development will now be led by Maxim Konovalov, who serves as vice president of engineering for the NGINX product group.
Igor founded NGINX in 2002 and handled all development essentially by himself until the creation of NGINX Inc in 2011. Since 2012, Igor stepped back from routine coding for NGINX, with the main responsibilities for maintaining the codebase taken over by Maxim Dunin, Valentin Bartenyev, and Roman Arutyunyan. After 2012, Igor's involvement in development focused on serveris NGINX Unit applications and the njs engine.
In 2021, NGINX became the most widely used HTTP proxy and webserverilt. It is now the largest open-source project created in Russia. It is noted that after Igorâs departure from the project, the culture and development approach established during his tenure will remain unchanged, as will the attitude towards the community, transparency in processes, innovation, and open code. The remaining development team will strive to meet the high standards set by Igor.
