Sam Hartman, Debian project lead, in an attempt to resolve the disagreements between the maintainers of the elogind packages (an interface to run GNOME 3 without systemd) and libsystemd, caused by conflicts between these packages and the recent refusal of the team responsible for preparing releases to include elogind in the testing branch, has allowed for the possibility of supporting multiple initialization systems in the distribution.
If project participants vote for the diversification of initialization systems, all maintainers will be involved in collaborative efforts to tackle this issue, or special developers will be appointed to address the problem, and the maintainers can no longer ignore alternative initialization systems, remain silent, or delay the process.
