Mir 2.25 display server release

Released the Mir 2.25 display server, which continues to be developed by Canonical, despite the cessation of development on the Unity shell and Ubuntu for smartphones. Mir remains in demand for Canonical's projects and is now positioned as a solution for embedded devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). The project's code is distributed under the GPLv2 license.

Mir provides a set of libraries for creating composite serverid based on the Wayland protocol and includes typical functionality of window managers and display servers. The project is designed to operate on various classes of devices, from standard desktop systems to embedded devices and Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Notable projects based on Mir include the Miracle compositor, the Ubuntu Frame shell for Internet kiosks, and the Miriway user environment.

  • Support for the Wayland extension ext-foreign-toplevel-list has been added to obtain information about surfaces located at the very top level (toplevel), which allow the organization of window pinning above other content, for example, to connect custom panels and window switches.
  • Support for the Wayland extension ext-data-control has been added, allowing privileged clients to manage data handling, for instance, for implementing clipboard managers.
  • Partial support for the Wayland extensions ext-image-capture-source and ext-image-copy-capture has been implemented to capture content displayed on the screen.
  • The management of Wayland extensions has been redesigned.
  • The evdev-rs platform has been added, implementing libinput (input event handling) in Rust.
  • The package mir-renderer-gl, providing functionality for rendering via OpenGL, has been included in the platform.
  • The animation for cursor resizing has been improved.
  • A LocatePointer class has been added.
  • ApplicationSwitcher and StandardApplicationSwitcher handlers have been added to simplify implementation of switching between applications with Alt + tab.
  • A new FloatingWindowManager class has been proposed with the implementation of a window manager (the old MinimalWindowManager class has been deprecated).
  • A method mir::report_exception() has been added.
