Open Media Alliance (AOMedia), which oversees the development of the AV1 video encoding format, announced the publication at the end of the year of an open standard and reference implementation for the new AV2 video encoding format. This new standard is seen not only as a continuation of the AV1 video codec development but also as the foundation for the future AOMedia technology stack. The development of AV2 has been ongoing for several years, with the first preliminary implementation proposed two years ago, included in the release of the libavif 1.0 library.
Like AV1, the new video encoding format does not require royalty payments and is based on technologies, patents, and intellectual property of AOMedia alliance members, who grant users a license for the free use of their patents with AV2. AOMedia's participants include companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Mozilla, Facebook, Amazon, Intel, IBM, AMD, ARM, Samsung, Adobe, Broadcom, Realtek, Vimeo, Cisco, NVIDIA, Netflix, and Hulu. The patent licensing model used by AOMedia is reminiscent of the approach taken by the W3C organization for the creation of royalty-free Web technologies.
