For historical reasons, FreeNAS and TrueNAS were developed, tested, and released separately, despite a large volume of common code. A significant effort was required to unify the build systems for the distribution and packages. In version , the TrueNAS code has achieved parity with FreeNAS in terms of plugin and virtual environment support, with the shared code exceeding 95%, which allowed for work to proceed on the final merging of the projects.
In version 12.0, expected in the second half of the year, FreeNAS and TrueNAS will be unified and presented under the common name "TrueNAS Open Storage." Users will be offered two editions: TrueNAS CORE and TrueNAS Enterprise. The first will be similar to FreeNAS and will be provided for free, while the second will focus on delivering additional capabilities for enterprises.
