Benjamin Summerton, PSRayTracing ray tracing system author, analyzed the performance impact of using the keyword «final» in C++ code, a feature that appeared in the C++11 standard. The testing was prompted by widespread claims online that the use of «final» could improve performance, which were limited to assessments without concrete results of the changes. <\/p>\n

Benjamin's testing revealed that the performance with «final» heavily depends on the compiler. In GCC, performance noticeably improved in many cases, but in Clang and MSVC, performance decreased in most cases, and more significantly. Besides the compiler, the platform played a significant role; for instance, the performance drop was more pronounced on a system with an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX CPU than on a system with an Apple M1 CPU.

For example, on an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX system with Ubuntu 23.10, when compiled with Clang, 90% of tests showed a slowdown of at least 5% when using «final», while in 2.5% of cases, an acceleration of at least 5% was recorded. With GCC, a 5% slowdown was noted in 0.9% of cases, while a 5% acceleration occurred in 15.8% of cases. In MSVC, a 5% slowdown was observed in 26.2% of tests, and a 5% acceleration in 13.3%. The author of the study concluded that it is necessary to avoid using «final».
