Kristoffer Gr\u00f6nlund, who works at SUSE, announced the creation of a fork of the Zed code editor, which will develop under the name Gram. The reason for creating the fork is the desire to produce a code editor that can serve as an alternative to VS Code, without utilizing AI-based functionality, not imposing the signing of an incompatible Terms of Use agreement, and not sending telemetry to corporations. The development will focus on creating a product that is convenient for beginner developers and students, whom the author of the fork teaches. The project's code is distributed under the GPLv3 and AGPLv3 licenses. <\/p>\n

The differences between Gram and Zed include the cessation of AI tool delivery and code for telemetry sending, the removal of ties to proprietary server handlers, third-party services, and components used for code collaboration and automated updates. Users of Gram are not subjected to separate terms of use (Terms of Service) or paid subscriptions. <\/p>\n

Further development of the fork is planned to be carried out conservatively, independently from Zed and corporations, with a primary focus on ensuring stability. Changes to Gram are accepted without the need to sign a Contributor License Agreement (CCA). Changes under the Apache 2.0 license will not be accepted in Gram; only GPLv3 and AGPLv3 licenses can be used for new code (Zed was distributed under three licenses: Apache 2.0, GPLv3, and AGPLv3, allowing its code to be used in proprietary products without disclosing modifications). <\/p>\n

At the same time, the first release of Gram was published, in which code related to AI, telemetry, loading and installing updates, code collaboration, and account binding was removed. Among the additional features, the editor includes documentation, support for the programming languages Gleam, Zig, and Odin, and an input completion system in the Vim Supertab style. Installed plugins in Gram must be built from source code and are not updated automatically. For downloading LSP (Language Server) and Node components, user confirmation of the operation is required. Ready builds are prepared for Linux and macOS.

Notably, this is not the first fork of Zed \u2014 the Zedless project develops a fork focused on ensuring privacy and isolated local work without referring to external servers. In Zedless, as in Gram, the ties to proprietary cloud services have been removed, code for sending telemetry and automatically generated crash reports has been deleted, and a CLA agreement is not required. Meanwhile, the functionality for collaboration has not been removed but is focused on deploying one's own infrastructure; however, the user can choose to revert to using external services at their discretion. <\/p>\n

The Zed project is led by Nathan Sobo, the author of the Atom editor (the base of VS Code), with the participation of a team of former developers of the Atom editor, the Electron platform, and the Tree-sitter syntax parsing library. The development takes into account the experience of creating Atom and attempts to embody some ideas about how the ideal editor for programmers should look. Zed combines a lightweight text editor and the functionality of modern integrated development environments into one product. Great attention is paid to performance and interface responsiveness \u2014 the project's creators envisioned that all actions during editing should be executed instantly, and coding tasks should be solved in the most efficient manner. Zed's high performance is achieved through active use of multithreading, utilizing all available CPU cores and involving the GPU in the rendering process.
