Hypervisor on vajalik, et k\u00e4ivitada teatud tarkvara mitteeksisteerivas (virtuaalses) keskkonnas, peites samal ajal sellest tarkvarast t\u00f5elise riistvara, mille peal see tarkvara t\u00f6\u00f6tab. Hypervisor toimib \"vahekihina\" f\u00fc\u00fcsilise riistvara (majakas) ja virtuaalse operatsioonis\u00fcsteemi (k\u00fclalisena) vahel.<\/p>\n<p>Kuna KVM on standardne Linuxi kerneli moodul, saab ta kerneldelt k\u00f5ik vajalikud eelised (m\u00e4lu haldamine, ajakava jms). Seet\u00f5ttu saavad l\u00f5puks k\u00f5ik need eelised ka k\u00fclalised (kuna k\u00fclalised t\u00f6\u00f6tavad hypervisoril, mis t\u00f6\u00f6tab Linuxi operatsioonis\u00fcsteemi kerneli peal).<\/p>\n<p>KVM on v\u00e4ga kiire, kuid seda ei piisa virtuaalse operatsioonis\u00fcsteemi k\u00e4ivitamiseks, kuna vajatakse I\/O emulatsiooni. Kuna Ring 1-l ei olnud piisavalt \u00f5igusi OS-i normaalseks toimimiseks, pidi h\u00fcperviisor igal korral, kui k\u00fclalisest s\u00fcsteemist toimus privileegitud kutse, selle kutse reaalajas modifitseerima ja t\u00e4itma Ring 0-l (umbes nii, nagu teeb QEMU).
