Juhtimisdaemoni ja Shepherd'iga seotud utiliidid on kirjutatud keeles Guile (Scheme'i rakendus), mida kasutatakse ka teenuste seadistuste ja k\u00e4ivitamise parameetrite m\u00e4\u00e4ramiseks. Shepherd'i kasutatakse juba GuixSD GNU\/Linux distributsioonis ning on suunatud ka GNU\/Hurdi kasutamiseks, kuid v\u00f5ib t\u00f6\u00f6tada igas POSIX-\u00fchilduvas operatsioonis\u00fcsteemis, kus on saadaval keel Guile.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd'i saab kasutada nii peamise initsialiseerimiss\u00fcsteemina (init c PID 1) kui ka eraldi rakendusena kasutajate taustaprotsesside haldamiseks (nt teenuste k\u00e4ivitamiseks nagu tor, privoxy, mcron jms), teostades seda \u00fclendatud \u00f5igustes vastavalt kasutajatele. Shepherd haldab teenuste k\u00e4ivitamist ja peatamist, arvestades teenuste vahelisi seoseid, d\u00fcnaamiliselt m\u00e4\u00e4rates ja k\u00e4ivitades teenused, s\u00f5ltuvalt valitud teenusest.
