Ariadne Conill, cr\u00e9atrice du lecteur de musique Audacious, initiatrice du d\u00e9veloppement du protocole IRCv3 et leader de l'\u00e9quipe de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 d'Alpine Linux, a men\u00e9 une \u00e9tude sur la fa\u00e7on d'optimiser l'utilitaire cat, qui affiche un ou plusieurs fichiers sur la sortie standard. Deux options d'optimisation ont \u00e9t\u00e9 propos\u00e9es pour am\u00e9liorer les performances de cat sous Linux, bas\u00e9es sur l'utilisation des appels syst\u00e8me sendfile et splice pour copier directement les donn\u00e9es entre des descripteurs de fichiers au niveau du noyau sans changer de contexte vers l'espace utilisateur. <\/p>\n

L'impl\u00e9mentation de base, utilisant les appels traditionnels read et write, entra\u00eenant un changement de contexte, lors de la copie d'un fichier de 4 Go \u00e0 partir de tmpfs a montr\u00e9 des performances de 3,6 Go\/s. La variante bas\u00e9e sur sendfile a permis d'augmenter les performances \u00e0 6,4 Go\/s, tandis que la variante bas\u00e9e sur splice a atteint 11,6 Go\/s, soit plus de trois fois plus rapide que la variante initiale.
