Le langage APL se caract\u00e9rise par son optimisation pour le traitement de tableaux de niveaux d'imbrication arbitraires et son support des nombres complexes, ce qui le rend pris\u00e9 pour les calculs scientifiques et le traitement des donn\u00e9es. Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1970, l'id\u00e9e d'une machine APL a donn\u00e9 lieu \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation du premier ordinateur personnel au monde, l'IBM 5100. APL a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s populaire sur les ordinateurs sovi\u00e9tiques au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 80.
