Developers of Xfce have updated the page regarding plans to add support for the Wayland protocol. The plan now includes a mention of the implementation of initial support for Wayland in the core components of the upcoming significant release Xfce 4.20, while maintaining support for X11. Previously, the issue of preserving backward compatibility with X11 was under discussion, without reaching a consensus. It has now been decided that support for X11 will not be discontinued in the foreseeable future.
The Wayland session in Xfce 4.20 will cover the minimally required set of features, with plans to gradually add the missing functionality as the subsequent releases are prepared. Additionally, development will continue to refine the operation within the Wayland-based environment in already ported user applications.
It is noted that the project lacks resources to maintain its own composite manager for Wayland, and the possibility of using XWayland for operation has been dismissed. The previously made decision to use the wlroots library instead of libmutter in the Wayland environment, which is developed by the Sway user environment developers and provides the basic functions for organizing composite manager operations based on Wayland, remains unchanged.
The xfdesktop desktop and xfce4-panel have already been ported for Wayland with consideration for using wlroots and will continue to develop as separately running components. The xfce4-panel operation has been verified with composite managers. poslužiteljima Labwc and Wayfire. To abstract the operation over Wayland and X11, the libxfce4windowing library is utilized, providing a layer to abstract from the graphical subsystem, in which the components of window management (screens, root windows, virtual desktops, etc.) are implemented, independent of a specific windowing system. X11 support is based on libwnck (Window Navigator Construction Kit).
Among the components ported to Wayland, the following have also been noted: exo, libxfce4ui, libxfce4util, thunar, xfce4-appfinder, xfce4-settings, xfconf, xfce4-power-manager, tumbler, garcon, thunar-volman, and xfce4-dev-tools. Wayland support is currently absent in the xfce4-session manager and the xfwm4 window manager, but there exists an unofficial port of xfwm4 for operation using Wayland.
