Ryan Marcus, developer of the experimental Bao optimizer for PostgreSQL, which employs machine learning to optimize query execution, published the performance testing results of the standard PostgreSQL query optimizer. The testing covered PostgreSQL branches from 8.4 (2009) to 16 (2023). Performance was measured using the JOB (join order benchmark) collection, which includes over 100 complex queries with a large number of JOIN operations aimed at verifying various aspects of the query optimizer's work.

Compared to PostgreSQL version 8.4, the execution speed of test queries in PostgreSQL 16 nearly doubled. Each new major version of PostgreSQL is, on average, 15% faster than the previous one during JOB tests.
